The Lady Bug and Super Cat Disaster: A Lazy, Low-Budget Knockoff

summarizeEditor's Summary

I'm still trying to figure out why anyone thought this show was a good idea. The Ladybug and Cat Noir series has some of the most cringeworthy animation I've ever seen. The graphics are straight out of the 90s, with textures that look like they were ripped from a low-res video game. The characters' designs are laughable, and the story is predictable and boring. I'm not even getting into the terrible sound design – it's like they forgot to add any background noise to the city scenes. If you're looking for a kids' show that's actually worth watching, keep looking. The show's attempts at humor are occasionally amusing, but it's not enough to save it from its overall lack of quality. I used it for a week and it was a chore to watch.

The Lady Bug and Super Cat Disaster: A Lazy, Low-Budget Knockoff
As an adult, I shouldn't care about kids' cartoons, but the existence of Ladybug casts a dark shadow over my childhood. That's why I'm ready to take revenge in the name of the moon.
The Ladybug and Cat Noir series has only downsides and no upsides. It's a show that fails to deliver on even the most basic levels.
Let's start with the graphics. They're clunky and outdated, like they were drawn in the mid-90s. The textures are awful, and there's no depth to the spaces. Look at the general plans - it's just an empty Paris.
The streets are completely empty, with no signs of life anywhere. Check out the building designs, and it's always sunny! Usually, when using general plans, they at least draw some scenes with people in them. But here, there's nothing. The city's streets are completely empty. And to make matters worse, there's no city noise in the background.
Where's the sound of cars? Where's the sound of voices? It feels like the only people in this world are Marinette, her love Adrian, their classmates, and their parents.
The character designs look like they were created by students on a 3D graphics and animation course trying to save money.
The one major drawback - ridiculously overpowered characters. I'm a huge fan of shows that put their faith in strong, well-written characters, who serve as role models for the next generation. But in this case, we're stuck with default characters. I mean, characters that are basically just placeholders.
Honestly, these characters just exist. They don't grow, they don't have any global goals in life, they don't have any challenges beyond being heroes - they don't overcome their complexes, and they don't develop at all.
In Ladybug and Cat Noir, none of the characters have a storyline arc. None. Marinette Dupain-Cheng doesn't change at all after becoming Ladybug. In fact, she doesn't even develop her superhero skills. She's got a basic set of abilities she demonstrates in every episode, and that's it - she's not growing, her powers aren't getting stronger, she's just learned to apply a default set of skills and that's it.
The same goes for the second main character, Adrian or Cat Noir (Super Cat). His main thing is being just likable and positive in every way. He's kind, he helps out, you can count on him.
This character doesn't develop at all, just like none of the other characters do. They're as frozen and lifeless as the streets of Paris in the Ladybug universe. And just like there's no character development in terms of their personalities.
Minus three - The Villain.
You know how in Sailor Moon, each season had a new villain with their own goal and their own secret plan? But in Ladybug, we don't get that luxury. We've got one villain for the whole series: Hawk Moth. And you know what's the most amazing thing? His personality isn't even a mystery! We know what he's all about from the get-go! So, what's the deal with Ladybug? Well, Hawk Moth is this adult, successful guy who's somehow trying to take over the world with some bizarre plan. I mean, what's his deal?
Hawk Moth is just like the heroes he's fighting against - he just exists and, by default, he's the bad guy.
Yeah, every season of Ladybug is just Hawk Moth trying to grab the Ladybug and Cat Noir's powers, and our heroes trying to stop him.
I don't know how much patience today's audience has to sit through this whole series.
Now, let's get to the biggest minus of this show.
The plot and the intrigue in this series are basically non-existent. And you know why? Because none of the characters have a storyline arc. So, there's nowhere for the plot to go, and that's why it doesn't exist.
The main intrigue of the show is - believe it or not - whether Cat Noir recognizes Ladybug in his classmate Marinette Dupain-Cheng, and whether Marinette figures out that the boy she's crushing on is actually Cat Noir.
Watching this show is like being stuck in a time loop – the same characters, the same plot, and the same everything. You might say that Sailor Moon had a similar issue with its heroines looking identical in their civilian and superhero forms, but at least that was part of the show's canon. Not so with Lady Bug, where the other heroes transform into completely different people. It's like they're stuck in some kind of bizarre limbo, where nothing ever changes.
The lack of character development is staggering. New characters never join the show, old ones never leave, and the ones that are already there remain stuck in a perpetual state of stagnation. It's like the writers ran out of ideas and just gave up.
I'm constantly comparing Lady Bug to Sailor Moon, and it's not just because of the whole 'identical heroines' thing. Take a look at the transformation scenes – they're like night and day. Sailor Moon's transformations are epic, with dramatic music and flashy effects. Lady Bug's, on the other hand, are about as exciting as a wet sock.
I've gotta say, Lady Bug and Super Cat is a total disaster. The whole thing feels like a lazy, low-budget knockoff of the classic superhero shows I grew up with. I'm not sure who the target audience is, but I've got to imagine that even the most die-hard kids wouldn't find this thing remotely compelling. It's just a bunch of stagnant, poorly animated nonsense.
I wouldn't recommend wasting your time.
