Hooked on Anatomy of a Murder, a Russian Detective Series with a Twist

summarizeEditor's Summary

I'm completely hooked on Anatomy of a Murder, a Russian detective series that's got me binge-watching with great enthusiasm. It's not exactly the Russian Sherlock Holmes, but it's an interesting take nonetheless. What I love about this show is that each season revolves around a different crime, keeping things fresh and exciting. The show's setting is always in beautiful locations, making the visuals a treat. I've been thoroughly entertained by the twists and turns in each episode, particularly in the Blood Ties episodes of the fourth season. I've gotta say, the show's attention to detail in its crime investigations is impressive, and the characters are well-developed and complex, making it easy to become invested in their stories.

I've been totally captivated by Anatomy of a Murder, a Russian detective series that's got me binge-watching with great enthusiasm. It's not exactly the Russian Sherlock Holmes, but it's an interesting take nonetheless.
What I love about this show is that each season revolves around a different crime, keeping things fresh and exciting.
The fourth season, specifically the episodes called Blood Ties, is my favorite so far. I loved watching the investigation unfold and the plot twist at the end was both unexpected and true to the spirit of great detective stories.
The show's setting is always in beautiful locations - a theater, a mansion, or a museum. So, the visuals are always a treat, taking my mind off the crimes.
Darja Semenova's portrayal of the pathologist Evgenia Volkova is particularly impressive in these episodes. She really shines in this role, and I love how the script brings out her character's depth. Although, it's worth noting that she got a marriage proposal in a different season.I was really curious to see how the main character evolved throughout the series. Her hair, her style – it all seemed to change, and with it, I thought, her personality. From super practical and logical to quirky and feminine, it was a wild ride.
I have to say, the female lead in this show is someone you start to sympathize with from the very first minute of Anatomy of a Murder. She's a forensic pathologist, but more than anything, she's a woman. What's really striking is how her style changes, and with it, her character and the way she approaches her role. She's completely different, but always makes the right deductions, even if she gets there in a really weird and unpredictable way.Andrei Chernyshov (Evgeny Karsky), the boyfriend, just doesn't do it for me. I'm left wondering how the writer managed to hack into all the databases and get the information his girlfriend needs - it's like he's a special agent. And how does he find the time to write his literary masterpieces?
I have to give a shoutout to Daniil Slivakovskiy for his portrayal of Investigator Perfiliev in Anatomy of a Murder. At first, his manner of speech and constant accusations against everyone in the early scenes had me raising an eyebrow, but as the character developed, I found myself feeling a deep sense of compassion and empathy towards him. The way he goes from being a skeptical investigator to someone who's willing to show mercy is truly impressive.
I have to say, despite the fact that he changes shirts and suits, his overall look is really cohesive and consistent, and his external changes don't affect his character in this role at all. To be honest, I didn't even notice until I started taking screenshots for this review that his clothes change in every scene. For me, he's just a detective who wears a standard suit, and that's it. The clothes don't distract me.I also wanted to give a shout-out to two actresses in this movie. If I'm being honest, I forgot about most of the other actors pretty quickly, but these two really stood out.
First off, there's Ekaterina Stulova, who played the lady in a military uniform.
Unfortunately, she's stuck in my head as the same character she played in the TV series 'Zukis'. To me, her look is just a different package, but the rest is the same as it was in that series.
At first, it even bothered me a bit and was a bit distracting, but then it became clear how beautifully it was played out in contrast with Evgeniya (the pathologist), the main heroine.
The other actress, on the other hand, really transformed. Her character is the same as it was in the series about Puskarov, but she behaves completely differently, which is great. And she's a beautiful actress. It was a pleasure to see her on screen. She really transformed.

I've got to say, the series turned out to be pretty interesting. And from Papi's Daughters, the dad played one of the roles here. And One for All was in some episodes, but I won't go into that. This is a complete transformation.
I'd divide the actors in this movie into three groups:
First - completely forgettable, even if they have key roles in the movie, you forget about them a few minutes after watching it.

Second - those who played secondary roles, but managed to make an impression.

And the third - a mix of actors from other series, either they fit in or they don't.
Despite that, Anatomy of Murder is an interesting series. And almost every episode ends with some kind of intrigue. I'm eagerly waiting to see what happens next.
Who's the killer?
It's not always clear, which is actually a nice surprise for me as a viewer.
I think Evgenia Volkova and Perfiliev are definitely vying for the roles of Russian Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, but in their own unique way.
What didn't I like?
Unfortunately, it's not all sunshine. The filming can be a bit off at times, especially when it comes to framing shots. There are scenes where people are partially cut off, with their arms or legs sticking out of frame when they shouldn't be. If they could fix that, it'd be a lot better. As it stands, I'm giving it four stars instead of five.
This is my review of another great show, Trigger.
