I'm an anime fanatic, especially when it comes to fantasy. I usually stick to modern shows, but I decided to dive into some classics. Today, I want to share my thoughts on Berserk 1997.
First, some background: Berserk is a 1-season anime with 25 episodes, and it's got an impressive 8.7 IMDB rating. On MyAnimeList, it's got an 8.6 rating, which isn't surprising given the dark fantasy world it's set in.
This medieval fantasy world is where our story takes place, following a lone mercenary named Gatts. One day, he meets Griffith, the leader of a famous mercenary group. They take Gatts under their wing, and his adventures begin.
But things take a dark turn when a betrayal and bloodshed lead to a new king coming to power. His demonic minions wreak havoc until a heavily armed warrior appears in the city. This warrior, known as the Black Swordsman, is covered in armor, weapons, and scars. He's got a serious hatred for the king and his demons.
One of the things that really stood out to me was the complexity of the characters. Gatts, for example, is a tough mercenary who's brutal and quiet. He's more of a doer than a talker, but despite his tough exterior, he's got a great sense of humor and knows how to get under his opponents' skin.
Griffith, on the other hand, is an experienced warrior and a great leader. He's earned the respect of his subordinates, and he's calm, calculating, and decisive. He's willing to do whatever it takes to achieve his goals, and throughout the anime, he undergoes significant character development.
The female warrior, Casca, is also a great character. She's deeply attached to Griffith and is a commander who earns the respect of her subordinates. She's always clashing with Gatsu because she dislikes his recklessness, but despite being assaulted multiple times and injured countless times, she always charges headfirst into battle.
The plot of Berserk is engaging, and it's got some really interesting themes. It's a really dark and bleak anime, with a lot of bloody and brutal fight scenes. The show's got wars, assaults, bloody battles, pedophilia, and all sorts of other stuff that's not for the faint of heart.
One of the things that I loved about Berserk was the relationship between Gatsu and Griffith. They're polar opposites, and it's even evident in their physical appearance. Gatsu is a big guy, dark-haired and dark-eyed, while Griffith is a sleek, long-haired blonde with light eyes. As the story unfolds, you see how they go from being strangers to becoming friends, and then their relationship takes a dramatic turn.
The relationship between Casca and Gatsu is also really interesting. They go from being at odds with each other to becoming friends, and eventually, it takes a romantic turn.
In the end, I absolutely loved Berserk. I'm bummed that they only adapted 80 chapters out of 360, but I'd still give it 5 stars and highly recommend it. Thanks for reading, and see you next time ❤️
