A Comedy That Falls Flat: Why This Movie's a Total Disappointment

summarizeEditor's Summary

I'm not exactly the review-writing type, but this movie left me feeling pretty underwhelmed. The idea of remaking classic Soviet comedies with a modern twist seemed like a great concept, but it fell flat in execution. The movie's attempt at humor was a total letdown, with cheap jokes and a confusing plot that had me scratching my head. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the kookol'dism plot twist – it just didn't make sense. The movie's visuals were crisp and well-produced, but they couldn't make up for the poor storytelling. Overall, I'd say this movie's a total disappointment.

I'm not exactly the review-writing type, but this movie left me feeling pretty underwhelmed.
Every year, a well-known channel tries to remake classic Soviet comedies for the new year, and it seemed like a great idea: take the concept, modernize it, and let it happen in our time, with humor, fun, and traditions of the Caucasus – but without the cheap, disgusting jokes about kookol'dism!
You know what I mean? In a great comedy where there's kindness, cunning, and genuine love, they threw in kookol'dism! How could one plot twist go in this direction?
I hope you're as confused as I am!
What's the movie about:
This movie is like a trash can. It's got everything, but take a look – there's a piece of an apple core, a bit of missing sausage, and a potato skin – everything's beautifully presented and delicious, but in this movie, it's all just cores and missing bits!
So, the trash can contents of the movie are:
1 – a mix of a bunch of movies.
There's Forrest Gump, which is the main storyline.
-Irony of fate,
-12 Friends of the Ocean,
-King's Man,
-Gentlemen of Fortune,
-The Prisoner of the Caucasus with Shurik's Adventures,
-Fowl Tales,
-The Adventures of Electronics,
-The Godfather,
-12 Chairs,
-The Office Romance,
-Substance,
-A scene from some movie about 'she said she loves you!' 'No, she can't love me, I love you!'
-Sasha-Tanya,
-A musical with popular artists,
And a whole lot more – honestly, it's just too much to remember.
There's just too much!
And all this greatness is reduced to a tiny apple core.
Waiter! Replace the dish – it looks like a blind chef cooked it!
I want to give credit to the makeup artists and costume designers – some characters turned out very similar to the originals. I loved the costumes, music, and colors of the movie - they're all top-notch! The picture's bright, but the storyline had me yawning. I didn't even crack a smile once. By the end, I was just waiting for it to be over - how long can a movie drag on? I want to make it clear that I'm not one of those people who has a bias against Russian cinema. I love a good movie, no matter where it's from. What really didn't sit well with me:
- the cringeworthy jokes - especially the ones about the kookolds. I mean, come on, comedy club humor is just so cheesy and lame.
- Yana Koshkina. She's stuck in this one-dimensional character of a sexy, airheaded girl. Yana's gorgeous, even if she is silicone, but can't she play more than just a pretty, dumb girl?
- Costykin, the stripper. His body's great, but his face looks like his grandfather's, and the whole 'stripper from a cake' thing is just a cliché. Would you really hire someone like that for your bachelorette party? I don't know anyone who would.
- Nina, who's throwing books, spraying paint on the walls, and spraying champagne everywhere - it's just so tacky and not funny.
- Korkorov's just there for the sake of being there - he's completely out of place.
- The Dolina song, 'for money, yes' - I don't need to explain that one.
- this movie's not suitable for kids! If you're watching the original version with your family every year, this parody's a definite no-go. Your 5-6 year old will ask, 'mom, who's a kookold?' It's just too much for me.
- the sheer amount of advertising! It's not even subtle - there are actual commercials in the movie. There are just too many of them, and it's just plain disrespectful to the viewer.
What I did enjoy:
- I loved the songs - all of them, except for Dolina's. They're all catchy and make you want to sing along and dance.
- I really enjoyed Irina Gorbachyova and her Mery Poppins character - she was perfect for it, and the King's Man scene was great.
- like I said, the costumes and some of the locations are spot-on. It's really beautiful, and some of the actors look just like the originals. For example, Sahakov -
Verdict:
I wouldn't recommend this comedy at all. To be honest, it's just not funny, and the only reason I think it might seem entertaining is if you're drunk. But when you're sober, the humor falls flat.
I'm writing this review two days after watching the movie, and I've already forgotten half of it. The plot is just a jumbled mess, and there's nothing memorable about it. It's like a quick flash of images, and then it's over.
The filmmakers tried to pack too much into this movie, and it ends up feeling like a mess.
This isn't a family-friendly or holiday movie – it's more suited for young people who are looking for something mindless to watch while they're drunk.
I watched this movie to prove to myself that even comedies can be terrible. And, honestly, it was a real snooze-fest, so I wanted to write a review.
I won't be re-watching this anytime soon, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else.
This movie is a total disappointment.
