A Train Ride That'll Keep You on the Edge of Your Seat
Sealed-train thrillers are a unique breed of thriller that'll hook you from start to finish. I'm talking about a captivating ride that'll keep you guessing until the very end.
Lauren Kaye's VZAPERTI is a masterclass in building suspense and creating an atmosphere of uncertainty. The story's a complex web of characters, motives, and crimes that'll keep you on the edge of your seat.
VZAPERTI's a story about people, their fates, and the twists of fate that bring them together on a train headed for New Dem town. As we navigate through the story, we'll slowly unravel the mystery and get closer to the truth.
In car 7, strange things start happening. Someone slashes a girl, then there's a murder, and then the passengers in this car are actually locked in. But the body from the closed car somehow disappears, leaving everyone wondering what's going on.
Each character in VZAPERTI is unique, unusual, and interesting in their own way. We meet Fox, a talented illusionist who's wasting his talent by swiping wallets from passersby; Polsky, a serious doctor who's on his way to New Dem; and Josie, a dark-haired girl who seems familiar to both Fox and Polsky, but they can't quite place where they've seen her.
Cab 7 is where the main characters find themselves locked in, trying to survive the night and uncover the truth behind the murders.
Fox - Barrow. He's a talented illusionist, but he's making a living the easy way. He can swipe a wallet from a passerby without anyone noticing. He's wasting his talent, hoping that one day he and Lian will have enough money to start fresh. But their plans aren't meant to be, and now he's heading to New Dem to try and lay low.
Polsky - a serious guy. A doctor who's also on this train, heading to New Dem.
Josie - a dark-haired girl who seems familiar to both Barrow and Polsky. Problem is, they can't quite place where they've seen her.
She gets attacked in her cabin. There are cuts on her shoulder, but she doesn't know who did it.
Jorge and his 4-year-old granddaughter are also in cab 7, locked in with the rest. Jorge has his own story, his own reasons for being here and his own plans for the future. But will any of it come to fruition? Only time will tell.
The story unfolds in fragmented pieces, which eventually come together at the end. The beginning sets the stage for the situation, gradually shifting focus to each character and their story, which reveals the connection to what's happening now.
I've got to say, the atmosphere of mystery and fear was recreated perfectly. The closed space makes people open up in the most complex situations, which adds to the intense emotions.
The atmosphere is created from all angles. From the start, it's the atmosphere on the train. It's built on not knowing what's going on, feeling trapped, and hopeless. People locked in a carriage where murders happen and you're not sure who to trust.
On the other hand, the atmosphere is recreated in each personal storyline. Each character has their own story of what led them to this train, and their entire life story. It's interesting, suspenseful, and adds to the complexity of the plot.
I've not read such top-notch thrillers in a long time. They're complex, intricate, suspenseful, and engaging. Every detail is thought out, every story is well-written, and every character has a solid motive. It all comes together in an excellent plot.
The idea of recreating something like Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express is what drew me in. The atmosphere of the train carriage, where all these people from different walks of life come together, is a mix of weirdness, crime, and trying to understand what's happening and why.
Of course, some of my guesses about what was happening were correct, but the story still managed to surprise me.
I loved how the author wove together the different storylines, creating a complex web of characters and motives that kept me guessing until the very end.
The characters in VZAPERTI are multi-dimensional and well-developed, each with their own unique backstory and motive for being on the train.
The atmosphere of mystery and suspense is palpable throughout the book, making it impossible to put down.
The plot is expertly crafted, with twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat.
