My Onyx Boox 5 E-Reader Review: A Big Improvement Over My Old Pocketbook

summarizeEditor's Summary

I recently ditched my old Pocketbook 617 for the Onyx Boox 5, and I'm loving the upgrade. The 7-inch screen is a total game changer – the text is crystal clear, and the font settings are super customizable. I was a bit skeptical about the build quality, but it's solid and feels premium. The battery life is also impressive, lasting longer than I expected. I've been using it for a week now, and I'm already hooked.

Hello!
I recently picked up a new e-reader, and I'm super excited to share my thoughts on it.
I've been using my old Pocketbook 617 for three years, and to be honest, I never really got into it. The 6-inch screen just wasn't big enough for me – the font wasn't clear, and after a year of use, the device started to slow down. I'd spend ages navigating the menu, selecting the wrong book, and it was super frustrating.
After doing some research on e-readers, reading reviews everywhere, including 4PDA, I decided the Onyx Boox 5 was the best option for me.
One of the main reasons I chose the Onyx Boox 5 is its huge 7-inch screen. I was sold on it as soon as I saw how beautiful and clear the text looked. The screen resolution is 300 ppi, and there are plenty of font settings and customization options, which is a huge plus for me.
The packaging is nice, and the e-reader comes with a magnetic cover. I was a bit surprised to find that the backing on both readers is pretty much identical.
So, what are the benefits of the Onyx Boox 5 compared to my old Pocketbook? First off, the screen is a huge upgrade. I can adjust the font size, style, and brightness to my liking, and the text is crystal clear. The backlight is super comfortable to read, and I love that I can choose a black screen for reading in the dark.
Another huge advantage of the Onyx Boox 5 is that it runs on Android, which means I can install any app I want. I use Yandex Books for reading, and I've also installed Notes and Yandex Mail, just in case. A lot of people install Telegram to download books from book chats.
The Onyx Boox 5 is also super snappy, way faster than my old Mobipocket and even my Pocketbook. The battery life is amazing – I've been using it pretty intensively for two weeks now, and it still has plenty of juice left.
The memory is 64 GB, which is more than enough for an e-reader. To be honest, 16 GB would be plenty, but it's nice to have the extra space.
Of course, no e-reader is perfect. One thing I don't love is that the book is a bit heavy with the cover on, and my hand gets tired holding it. Without the cover, it's not very comfortable – the back is slippery and feels cold. I've attached it to a magnetic clip, which made a huge difference, and I'd definitely recommend it.
Another downside is that the price is a bit steep. I wish the backing was a bit whiter, but it's not that noticeable compared to the packaging.
Despite all the downsides, I'm really happy with my purchase and have started reading more! The Onyx Boox 5 has been a game-changer for me, and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a great e-reader.
