My Cat's Ultrasound - What I Learned About Pets and Their Owners

summarizeEditor's Summary

I recently had to take my cat, Misha, to the vet for an ultrasound, and it was a surprisingly painless and informative experience. She'd been acting weird, staring at furniture and having accidents in the house, so I suspected a urinary tract infection or kidney stones. The vet clinic offered same-day appointments, which was a huge relief, and the ultrasound machine was top-notch. The vet was super knowledgeable and explained everything clearly, putting my mind at ease. The staff was gentle and caring, making the experience less stressful for Misha. The ultrasound revealed some hidden health issues that I wouldn't have known about otherwise. It was worth the cost for the peace of mind, but I wish they'd provided more info about the procedure beforehand.

I recently had an unexpected trip to the vet for an ultrasound, and I'm sharing my experience to help others.
What led me to this point
My cat, Misha, is a standard-issue, low-maintenance feline with a mix of Balinese and Siamese heritage. She's been vaccinated and spayed at the right age, and her diet has been pretty standard - Miratorg, Purina, and occasionally some other brand mixed with water.
But then, at the age of 2, she started showing some unusual behavior. She'd stare at the couches and new furniture in the house, including the sofa we bought after she had already made a mess on the old one (which is now gone). I was alarmed, so I started observing her behavior. She wasn't crying or showing any distress during her litter box trips, but these unexpected 'surprises' had me worried.
I called a veterinary clinic and explained my concerns - I suspected she might have a urinary tract infection and kidney stones, so I requested an ultrasound and a urine analysis.
I chose a clinic close to home because they offered to do the ultrasound on the same day.
Getting the analysis
I won't go into details about collecting the urine sample, but I will say that the process was a nightmare. They tried to charge me for every little thing, including disinfecting her litter box and making her pee in a clean container for a day. After the last attempt, I collected the sample in a human container and took it to the vet with me.
At the clinic
I'll write a separate review about the clinic, Vetsferra, but for now, let's get to the ultrasound.
Ultrasound CatMisha, my cat, is a pro at traveling, and she has a great little carrier for it.
Here's Misha in her carrier - isn't she cute?
Ultrasound CatEveryone's been telling me to get a carrier for her, but I've been able to keep her close to me in the cold weather, and she seems to like that.
Ultrasound CatThe clinic was clean and nicely decorated, with a spacious waiting area and a friendly young man in a white coat at the reception desk - he looked just like a doctor.
I walked into the doc's office, and he greeted me with a warm smile, saying, 'I'm your doctor.'
Who's here for a check-up? Let's get to know each other.
There's also a young nurse who's very helpful, assisting with procedures and whatnot. The rest is handled by the doctor himself.
We signed the contract, and I registered using my passport.
Cat UltrasoundNext up was weighing, and a thermometer in her bum – all normal.
Misha behaved like a pro, no fuss whatsoever.
Cat UltrasoundI put on a harness so I could grab her quickly if she made a run for it, but it never came to that.
Cat UltrasoundDoc shaved her belly, no issues at all, and we headed to the ultrasound room.
Cat UltrasoundThe ultrasound room itself was super comfy, just like a human clinic!
Cat UltrasoundAlexander Mikhailovich walked me through everything, explaining what he found in her kidneys and bladder. Turns out, it was just some sand – and he even broke it down for me, explaining exactly what it was. Since Misha wasn't putting up a fight, he even showed me how to 'shake it loose' using the ultrasound sensor: gentle, quick presses on her belly.
She handled the whole ultrasound thing like a pro, then snuggled up on my shoulder and fell asleep. I promised her, 'We're done, I swear – just for today.'
We're due for another blood test next week.
Results will be sent to us via email.
Uzi KoteI have to say, the doctor called me again two hours later to explain the results of my urine analysis in detail.
But he prescribed the medication right away.
I bought the first one on my way home, and the rest I'll order online.
Uzi Kote
Price
The ultrasound cost 1200 rubles, but with the examination and materials, it was around 1500 rubles. And then there were the urine analysis tests for 500 rubles, so the total came out to 2100 rubles.
Struvites
Well, it's not fatal.
Struvites form in alkaline urine and are a complex mixture of salts, mainly containing trivalent phosphate ions, as well as calcium, ammonia, and magnesium ions. Dehydration can cause crystallization.
And now, about how animals are similar to their owners. I've been suffering from kidney stones for many years, and of course, I'm always told to follow a diet. And during flare-ups, I treat myself conservatively. And it turns out that animals are prescribed the same medications, just in different doses.
Regarding food. In the clinic, there's a huge stand with expensive therapeutic foods that the doctor recommends.
Uzi KoteUzi KoteI listened carefully, but unfortunately, I couldn't afford to buy the 3000-ruble food right away.
Uzi KoteI'm not buying it because I don't want to waste money on my pet.
Almost at the finish line
We're responsible for those we've domesticated.
But I still haven't bought all the medications for myself this month, so we'll do everything gradually. At least we started the treatment on time.
We need to pay attention to hydration. During medical treatment, the following groups of medications are used:
Supplements for overall health;
Relaxants;
Products that help with kidney stone issues;
Antiseptics and anti-inflammatory medications.
To all our feline friends - whether you're a Bengal or a Maine Coon, and to their owners, may you enjoy the best of health and happiness with your beloved pets.
