I recently picked up a couple of bottles of Mela D'oro champagne on sale - a Brut and a semi-sweet. The Brut was a real winner, but the semi-sweet was a total letdown. It had this weird, unpleasant taste that I couldn't even finish half the glass. I'm not sure what went wrong, but the producer's the same (Republic of North Ossetia-Alania), and the grape varieties are identical (Rkatsiteli and Augustin). But if I'm gonna grab another bottle, it's the Brut for sure. The semi-sweet just didn't cut it.
At first, I was excited to try Mela D'oro, having heard great things about their champagnes. But unfortunately, my experience with the semi-sweet was a major letdown. The taste was off-putting and unpleasant, making it difficult for me to finish the glass.
The bottle itself is pretty and has a stylish design, which I appreciate. The natural cork is also a nice touch, but unfortunately, it's not enough to make up for the subpar taste of the semi-sweet champagne.
I've tried other champagnes from the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, and they've all been great. So, I'm not sure what went wrong with this particular bottle. Maybe it was just a bad batch, but it's definitely a disappointment.
Overall, I would not recommend the Mela D'oro semi-sweet champagne to anyone looking for a great champagne. There are far better options out there, and I would suggest sticking with the Brut if you're looking to try Mela D'oro.
