1 Trades. You'll see people screaming on forums about exchanging one Rar-ku for two, trying to get newbies to trade their cheap items for expensive ones.
And people actually believe it! Meanwhile, the Rar-ku costs a single ruble, and only a kid would make an unprofitable trade. In this case, it's more effective to stand with your hand out on the train station.
2 Bets. It's simple: we make bets on tournaments (because everyone thinks they're professional analysts in Dota) and win ten times what we would have otherwise.
Now, think about why bets were created in the first place – to make money for the site owners or the people placing bets. And the topic of bets is so overdone that I think you can predict the consequences of this 'way to make money' on your own.
3 Tournaments. Join tournaments and win a ton of money! One author even suggested winning the International and participating in the 18-lamb-dollar prize pool.
Now, try to find five decent, goal-oriented Dota players among your friends. (Good luck with that!) And play a ranked game with them on captain's mode. Most people who dream of a cyber-sports life have no idea what awaits them in this game.
So, what's the question here – why don't these tips work?

Because the difference between cheap items isn't that big. So, we can buy an expensive item on Dotamarket, sell it on Steam for 500 rubles more, find items that aren't too different in price, and sell them back on Dotamarket.
Yes, it's a lot of work: you'll have to dig around on both sites, wait for things to sell, and give a decent commission...
But it's money! Where else can you get 10-20% return on a thousand rubles in just a couple of weeks?
This is the result of my experiments from last year, summed up in a small Excel table. I monitored Dotamarket every day, looking for good buys, and turned a relatively small amount (around 200-300 rubles).
And I still managed to get 160 rubles in profit!
Now, of course, it'll be harder, since the site has become more popular and there's a lot of competition among speculators...
But our profit isn't going anywhere.
Let's face it, the hardest part of this game is getting your money back – i.e., selling your Steam stuff on Dotamarket with minimal losses. Sometimes you just want to throw in the towel and buy a game on Steam instead. Like, I turned a thousand bucks into a fifth copy of GTA...
