I spent the entire winter devouring Mikhail Sholokhov's 'The Quiet Don', and I'm still reeling from the experience. This epic novel is a sweeping tale of love, war, and family set against the backdrop of World War I and the Russian Revolution. What I loved most about this book is its raw, unflinching portrayal of life during this tumultuous period. Sholokhov's writing is masterful, and his characters are so vividly drawn that you can't help but feel like you're right there with them. If you're a fan of historical fiction, or just great storytelling in general, 'The Quiet Don' is an absolute must-read. A Hidden Gem of Russian Literature: Mikhail Sholokhov's 'The Quiet Don'
Hello there! I spent the entire winter devouring Mikhail Sholokhov's The Quiet Don. This isn't just a novel – it's an epic masterpiece that deserves way more attention from readers. I didn't read it in school, or at least not the whole thing. We only got to read a part of it, and I never got around to finishing it. I did watch a pretty lackluster movie adaptation (not even a Soviet one!), so the book kind of flew under my radar.
As I finally read it, I have to say I wasn't expecting a light, easy read at all. Sholokhov wrote this in his youth and went on to win the Nobel Prize for it. It's a name that's stuck in literary history ever since.
The book's divided into two volumes, with the first one written later than the second. I read the e-book version, but the print version looks pretty substantial (and I have it, but it's not exactly portable in a pocket-sized format with tiny text...).
The book's about the life of Grigory Melekhov, his family, and his loves against the backdrop of World War I and the Russian Revolution. It's a pretty broad historical sweep, covering the Russian Empire, then the Soviet Union. I won't go into the plot details and twists – I'll just share my thoughts on the whole thing.
The book's a pivotal time in history that shaped the lives of every citizen who fell asleep in the Russian Empire and woke up to the Civil War. You're left wondering who's right and who's wrong – 'the Reds' or 'the Whites' – and who deserves to die for their cause.
Propaganda and agitation were working overtime, making it hard for people to decide where to stand. Sholokhov shows this through Grigory Melekhov's story – and it's not just his. For me, the political line of this novel was the most interesting part, although, of course, the personal lives of the characters and their lives in society are also shown.
And the love story of Gregory Melekhov and Aksinya Aksyonova is almost legendary, romanticizing their relationship. I wouldn't say that this love story was super interesting for me personally – I'd even say it was a bit hard to understand, and the romanticization of this toxic relationship was unclear to me as well. Although, everyone can form their own opinion after reading the book.
I loved how the book delves into various personal themes that aren't alien to the characters – the author writes about love, turmoil, betrayal, friendship, and more. I didn't find any purely positive or negative characters; instead, I tried to understand and empathize with each of them, because, as they say, 'a stranger's soul is dark.' There are so many vivid and memorable characters, both male and female.
It's really interesting to watch and read how the characters' fates unfold against the backdrop of social and societal upheaval. I won't say that the book is easy to read – it's not! But it definitely deserves your attention. It's become one of my go-to books and ones I always recommend.
Sholokhov has a beautiful and engaging writing style – I devoured the descriptions of nature and the beauty of the Don River, which is also a main character, by the way! It's a real treat for the ears! I read and enjoyed the book, and I was thrilled by the author's undeniable talent – I'd even say genius.
After reading 'Don', even 'War and Peace' doesn't seem so scary anymore!
Book is strictly 18+! It contains explicit and quite harsh scenes, so the printed version was wrapped in plastic.
I wouldn't say that I expected such an ending to the novel, but it didn't disappoint me – it made me think about the past, as they say.
From me, 5 stars out of 5! This is an amazing work that I unreservedly recommend reading! And I'm definitely going to re-read it.
Thanks for your attention!
