A Mixed Bag: My Take on 'The Aviator'

I recently stumbled upon the Russian film 'Aviator,' which left me pondering the consequences of playing with fire when it comes to science and human emotions. The movie's storyline is a wild ride, and I found myself hooked from the get-go.

Intimate scenesFor the scientists out there. Be careful when thawing out impressive gentlemen from the past century, especially when they're young and handsome, and you're a young wife at home.Plot. I've got to admit, the plot is pretty interesting. I only managed to sit through 30 minutes. The storyline often left me confused, especially when it came to the human characters.For example, Anastasia is shown jumping off a 3-meter rock in the morning, dancing at a rich guy's party in the afternoon, and then riding a horse naked in front of Haben's uncurtained windows at night. And she doesn't even get a scratch.The AviatorRich guy Zheltkov is portrayed as being so ill that he's basically glued to a fifth wheel. He's bouncing around, squealing, and transferring huge sums of money to someone else's account. He's throwing massive parties and getting drunk. I felt like Haben needed medical attention more than anyone.Stychkyn was running like he'd just stepped out of a saunaAfter a while, my initial impressions started to wear off, and I decided to keep watching The Aviator.

But then I was hit with a healthy dose of Spanish shame. Remember Van'ka from 'The Goat-Footed Horse'? He's got a trick where he pulls out a sausage from his wide pants in the doorway of a communal apartment. In front of women.Shagin, dudeThe film is pretty clear about its anti-Soviet vibe. It's like, look at these stupid, bitter, and envious workers. And then compare them to the intelligent and aristocratic intellectuals.I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this actor, but he really nailed it in 'The Aviator'. Masonic symbols pop up not just in the opening credits. I'm pretty sure Egor Konchalovsky gets this aspect.

The romance. It feels like they just kept Darya Kukskikh on set and had her go around in circles. First, it's Habaevski panting over her, then Gorbatov jumping around, and then Shagin just lying there. Anastasia had some issues with her old partner, but with 100-year-old Innokenti, who's basically frozen, it was a different story altogether.Underwhelming romance I wasn't really invested in either of the couples, but the final outcome didn't sit well with me.The Aviator reviews Verdict. For me, the only interesting parts are the retrospectives (not the ones about childhood, but the ones set in St. Petersburg), which they awkwardly throw in amidst all the modern nonsense. Darya Kuksarska - she's a real stunner in those vintage dresses. But the gameplay style is a snooze fest. Gorbatov starts to shine by the middle of the film, and before that, it's a drag to watch. In "Shalyapin", he's way more interesting. Darya Kuksarska The biggest letdown is Ilya Korobko in the role of the Westernized brother of the aviator. He's incredibly piercing and lyrical in his gaze. First thought: "This guy would be perfect if they were remaking Yevtushenko".

I'm left feeling pretty underwhelmed. After giving "Plagiarist" a positive review, I'm not sure how to rate this one without being a hypocrite. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad film. Maybe give it a shot and see if you like it. But I got dragged through 1.5 hours of tedium for just a few atmospheric retro scenes.
