Supernatural: A Timeless Cult Classic

summarizeEditor's Summary

I gotta say, 'Supernatural' is one of those shows that's hard to get out of your head. Even if you've never watched an episode, you've probably seen jokes and memes about the characters and quotes from the show. It's a cult classic that's still widely popular years after its conclusion.

I'm pretty sure nobody's unfamiliar with the TV show 'Supernatural', even if you've never watched an episode, you've probably seen jokes and memes about the characters and quotes from the show. 'Supernatural' is basically a cult classic. Over 15 years on the air, it's amassed a huge fan base all over the world.
My opinion on the show changed a lot over the 15 seasons. Some people got disappointed and stopped watching, while others stuck with it till the end. I'm probably one of the latter. I won't say I'm a die-hard fan, and I do see some flaws, especially in the later seasons. But I still have a soft spot for the story of the two brothers and have watched it from start to finish twice.
Synopsis:
The show follows the adventures of brothers Sam and Dean Winchester as they travel across the United States in their black 1967 Chevrolet Impala, investigating paranormal activity, often based on American urban legends and folklore, and battling evil creatures like demons and ghosts.
There are three main storylines in the show, which sometimes run parallel to each other and sometimes intersect in unexpected ways.
The first plot thread is the one described in the show's description - monsters and the fight against evil.
The two brothers, Dean and Sam Winchester, travel from state to state, killing supernatural creatures. You'll see familiar monsters from mythology, legends, and other movies - werewolves, vampires, banshees, jinn, sirens, and ghosts. There are also many creatures that are rarely mentioned in cinema. Most of the characters are taken from urban legends, folklore, myths, and scary stories like Bloody Mary.
The Winchester brothers scour the news from all states, looking for events with unexplained and mysterious details. Usually, each episode features a new state and a new case. But sometimes, one storyline spans multiple episodes.
To get close to the victims or learn more about the case from the police or witnesses, the Winchesters often have to come up with fake identities. Most of the time, they pose as FBI agents, but sometimes it's something more interesting.
The biblical storyline starts to take shape.
I was blown away by how seamlessly the biblical theme was woven into the narrative from the very beginning. At first, it's subtle, but as the seasons progress, the biblical influences become more pronounced. We meet biblical characters who are far from the ones we're familiar with.
The family drama storyline is a wild ride.
"Saving people, hunting things - the family business."
I mean, the Winchester brothers have been dealing with this 'family business' for a long time, and it's been a real game-changer for them. The show starts with a tragic event from the brothers' childhood, which sets the tone for the first few seasons.
As the seasons progress, we get to know the Winchester family better, and their family tree is pretty complex. The brothers' relationship is put to the test, and we see them make some tough choices that have lasting consequences. The show explores themes of family, loyalty, trust, and the blurred lines between right and wrong. It's all pretty deep, but never boring. The dialogue is never forced or unnecessary - it's like you're eavesdropping on a conversation that's way more interesting than you'd expect.
Over 15 years, the brothers grow up right before our eyes.
Some fans have literally grown up with the show.
_______
I've got to give a special shoutout to the humor in this show. It's top-notch. There's some toilet humor, but it's pretty rare and not too cringeworthy. It's just right. There are episodes that are completely dedicated to something funny, and they're bad, but in a good way. They're just a wild ride.
There are so many jokes that have become part of the pop culture. I still hear and see people saying 'Chudnienko', 'Popa-zhopa', 'Ochesuet' and other stuff. Kudos to the Russian voice cast. By the way, I recommend watching the show in different voice casts, because each one has its own unique funny lines. And if you're fluent in the language, I'd recommend watching it in the original, because a lot of the jokes were adapted to be more relatable to the Russian audience, and they're not translated as intended.
The Winchester brothers have been the central characters throughout the series, but it's worth mentioning the secondary characters. And there are a lot of them. There's the Winchester family, other hunters, friends, colorful villains, and so on.
I'm really impressed with the casting of the show. The actors are all great in their roles. You can pick apart a few of them, but the positives far outweigh the negatives.
I'm not sure who the target audience is, but it's definitely not just one group. Guys, girls, young people, and older people all watch this show. At one point, 'Supernatural' had everyone hooked. Even if not everyone watched it to the end, they'll still remember, love, and cherish it for years to come.
