A Disappointing But Scenic Stop at Starominskaya Timashyevsk Station

summarizeEditor's Summary

I'm still blown away by the contrast between Starominskaya Timashyevsk station's gorgeous surroundings and its seriously subpar facilities. The old station building is a total blast from the past, but the toilet situation is a major letdown. With a bit more attention to customer experience, this station could be a real gem. Unfortunately, it's still a long way from being a top-notch transportation hub.

We spent an amazing week at Priazovye resort in Yeysk, soaking up the sun, enjoying the warm sea, and exploring the beautiful green city.
Our journey from Moscow to Yeysk by train and then to Starominskaya Timashyevsk station for the return trip to Smolensk was a real treat. The transfer from our resort to the station cost us 1200 rubles in 2019, and the journey took about an hour. The countryside views were stunning, with rolling fields and sunflowers as far as the eye could see.
When we arrived at the station, it was still relatively quiet in the mornings, and the place was spotless. The old station building was a blast from the past, and I couldn't resist taking a peek inside. There was a security guard at the entrance, and not many benches inside, but a few more outside to the left of the station. It's clear that the station isn't as busy in the mornings, but I'm sure it gets packed in the peak season.
The toilet situation was a major letdown, and it's hard to believe it's still like that. I'm not sure what's more surprising, the fact that it's still old or that it's a station that gets crowded with tourists in the summer. It was old, with holes in the walls, and no partitions - basically a nightmare. And to make matters worse, there was nowhere to wash your hands.
Just outside the station, there's a little kiosk selling kvass and lemonade at a cheaper price than in Yeysk. The vendor had bottles, so you can take some with you on your journey. They also sell nice, fresh walnuts for 100 rubles a packet (around 600-700 grams). I bought some, and they were really good, not rotten at all.
The platforms are pretty low, which can be super scary, especially if you've got kids with you. I was on edge the whole time, watching the trains go by, both passenger and freight. We had a few close calls, to be honest.
The announcements were super quiet and hard to make out, and the dispatcher would only say something just before the train arrived, so you'd have no idea which platform to go to. Our train was delayed for 2 whole minutes, and the dispatcher's announcement was so soft that I didn't even realize it was our train at first. I mean, who comes up with this kind of schedule? A train that's supposed to take a crowd of tourists, and it's delayed for 2 whole minutes? That was a bit of a bummer.
On the platform, we saw a cute little dog without a leg and a cat with some adorable kittens. There were bowls of food and water next to them, which just goes to show how kind and caring the station staff are.
I wish there was a little shop nearby, and, of course, a decent toilet would be a huge improvement. It's the 21st century, after all! A modern station deserves better facilities, especially for the tourists who visit in the summer.
