A Mixed Bag: Finding Reliable Workers Through Ruki

summarizeEditor's Summary

I'm not gonna sugarcoat it - finding reliable workers for our panel house renovation was a total nightmare. That's when I stumbled upon Ruki, an aggregator that connects homeowners with contractors. We used it to renovate our two-bedroom apartment, and here's the lowdown. It's not a game changer, but it's definitely worth every penny for the convenience and flexibility it offers. With Ruki, you can create an order, discuss the scope of work with an operator, and agree on dates and terms with a contractor. It's a straightforward process, but the quality of the work can vary. We had some issues with communication, but the contractors we worked with were generally reliable. We had to deal with some upselling and extra services, but that's to be expected when you're working with contractors. Overall, Ruki is a solid option for homeowners on a budget who need renovation work done. It's not perfect, but it gets the job done.

We recently bought a two-bedroom apartment in a panel house, P44. The place hadn't seen any major renovations since 1984, so besides the excitement of owning a home, we got another headache - the renovation. With our financial situation being a bit strained after buying the place, taking out a loan at the current interest rate just didn't make sense.
So, we decided to do it in phases. It's not ideal, but what can you do? We had no idea where to find reliable workers since we've never done any renovations before. Our friends who've renovated their apartments already have their places fixed up, so that's not an option for us. I stumbled upon reviews for 'Ruki' and decided to give it a shot.
As I understand it, 'Ruki' is an aggregator that connects people who need renovation work with contractors or teams.
How does the service work?
1) You need to register on the website or download the app
2) Then, you create an order and specify the exact work you need done
3) The operator calls you to discuss the scope of work and clarify any details
4) A contractor comes over, and you agree on dates and terms
5) After that, you're on your own with the contractor.
This is how our bathroom looked before the renovation. The tile was literally hanging off the walls. It's a typical Soviet-era apartment that's been neglected for years.
Our only new appliance is our washing machine with a dryer.
The lighting is a temporary fix since the old wiring burned out. The plumbing's been leaking.
I decided to rip out the entire plumbing and electrical system, replace the flooring and ceiling tiles, install a new sink, add two faucets (instead of one like in the previous setup), and hang a towel warmer. We're also swapping out the mirror for a new one with LED lighting, restoring the bathtub with acrylic, and painting the exterior. Initially, we thought about installing a floating floor over the tile, but we ended up just refreshing the grout instead.
Types of Work
• You can order everything from small jobs
• Or a full renovation: cosmetic, major, or designer
We created an order, specified the work we needed, and the operator gave us a quote. I'll save the details for later.
So, the electrician shows up and tells me he's not going to work through the service, that he wants to do a full demo first. We agree on a price that's half of what the service quoted us.
The main crew that's doing the renovation decides to go rogue, too, to avoid paying the service fee. They initially give us a quote for the demo, which comes out to a significant amount for the bathroom and toilet. We agree to it, and they say they'll assess the work after the demo. They get the demo done quickly, and there's more to the story – they start removing the pipes, but I didn't capture that on camera.
After the demo, an electrician came to do the agreed-upon work. He managed to finish it in a couple of hours, for which I'm grateful. We decided to keep his contact info, as he worked well and quickly.
But then the team came back and gave us a quote for the plumbing, plastic wall covering, installing a utility cabinet in the bathroom, sink, toilet, faucets, towel warmer, and all the little shelves and decorations – a significant amount for a 5-square-meter space. I ended up haggling furiously and managed to negotiate a price that was acceptable, which turned out to be higher than if we'd used the service. Although my husband is convinced that some minor work would've still popped up and the price would've been the same.
Here's the wall leveling and broken faucet stage.
We wanted to save money and not level the walls before applying the plastic panels. I've seen plenty of videos on Instagram where people apply panels to uneven walls, but we decided not to take the risk and do the renovation that'll last us for at least a few years.
The bathroom photos were taken during the renovation – it was a mess. There was no wall behind the toilet, just a flimsy structure made of plywood.
Now that the renovation's almost done, we're still deciding whether to tackle the final touches ourselves or hire a pro to help with the finishing touches.
Here's where we're at with the plumbing, tile work, and fixtures installed. Next up is re-glazing the shower and putting up the ceiling.
For comparison, the service quoted us a much lower amount for a full renovation. We ended up paying more, but there's a catch. The service tries to sell you a 'project' even when you just need a minor repair.
After the job was done, I noticed that one of the installers had drilled a hole in the wall in the bathroom while hanging the toilet paper holder. It's not a huge deal, but it's still annoying.
I'm also not a fan of how the workers left behind a bunch of small debris after they finished the job.
Takeaways
Looking back, the team got the job done pretty quickly, and apart from a few minor hiccups, it was decent. I guess if we'd used a repair service, it might've been cheaper, but that would've added a lot more time to the process. Luckily, we didn't need to worry about that.
