My trusty Redmond RT M403 Toaster: A Game-Changer for Almost 5 Years

I've been dreaming of having a toaster that could shoot out perfectly toasted bread, just like in those classic American movies. You know, slathering on still-warm jam or butter, taking a bite of that crispy toast, and washing it down with a cup of coffee and milk. And, I'm happy to say, that dream finally came true a few years ago.

We bought the Redmond RT M403 toaster in early 2017, and I still have the receipt somewhere. It cost us a pretty penny - around $2,000.

We chose this one because it looked really stylish, with its metallic silver body and a rather unique display with a countdown timer and mode selection.

Design:

The toaster comes in a cardboard box with a plastic handle for easy carrying.

The package includes the toaster itself, a warranty card, a user manual, and a bread warming tray.

I've got to say, the toaster itself looks super stylish. The front has a round display that's pretty easy to rotate, so you can adjust the toasting level to your liking. For a regular white bread, I usually set it to 4, whole wheat to 6, and if I'm using dark bread, it's 7 or 8. Of course, it's all about the bread itself, how quickly it toasts. The only way to figure that out is by experimenting. I've never set it to level 9. Above the display, there are four little LEDs that turn off one by one as the toast gets toasted.

Under the display, there are three small round buttons to cancel toasting if you catch a whiff of burnt toast. I needed that button a lot in the beginning until I got the hang of the toasting levels. There's also a button for preheating and defrosting.

On the right side, there's a crumb tray at the bottom that slides out when you press it. It's super handy for cleaning up crumbs before they get all burnt and gross.

One thing that's really cool is how easily the toast lever flips over to the toasting position. You don't need to apply a lot of force, and it only stays in toasting mode when there's actually bread in the slots.

And if you take a closer look inside, you can see the heating elements that actually do the toasting. It's pretty clever design.

The back of the device is pretty unremarkable.

The base, on the other hand, is a mesh made of black plastic. And, yeah, crumbs from bread can fall through it when you're moving it around.

My toasting experience.

I'll be honest, a toaster isn't the most essential appliance in my kitchen. Some people might say you can toast bread on a skillet or in the oven. But let's be real, a toaster does it way better and faster. You get that perfect crispy crust and soft inside - something that's hard to achieve with other methods, trust me.

I've had the Redmond RT M403 toaster for about 5 years now, and it's still going strong. It even survived a move without any issues.

I've got to give credit where credit is due - here are some of the pluses of this device:

Long battery life is a major plus for me. I'm loving the multiple toasting levels. The LED indicators that show how long it takes to toast my bread are a nice touch. The design is sleek and modern. The toasts don't fly off the appliance when it's done. The 80cm power cord is plenty long for my kitchen, but might be a bit short for some people. The crumb tray is a great feature. The appliance doesn't slip around on the countertop, and the feet are sturdy. I can stop toasting at any time with a simple button press. The appliance isn't too heavy, weighing around 1.5kg.

I haven't used the defrosting or reheating functions for bread, to be honest. I don't usually store bread in the freezer or fridge, but if you do, these features would be super handy.

As for the downsides, here are a few things that bug me:

Kernels of bread can get stuck on the underside of the appliance and are almost impossible to get out, even if you flip it over. I think the design could be improved to make it easier to get rid of them. Right now, I have to use a long stick (I use a sushi stick) to scrape them out and move the appliance around to get them to fall into the crumb tray. And of course, I have to turn it off first, or the appliance will start to smell like burnt bread. Has anyone else noticed this? This isn't really a con, but more of a characteristic of the appliance. It needs a straight slice of bread to work properly. If the bread is a bit curved, it can get stuck in the grill and won't come out when it's done toasting. And it'll also toast unevenly because of the curve.

The Verdict.

This is an excellent appliance with a long lifespan and adjustable toasting levels.
