Hello!

I had the chance to visit Pavlovsk in the Voronezh region for the first time this year, and I'm not confusing it with the eponymous suburb of St. Petersburg. I was pretty pessimistic about it, but I ended up being charmed from the very first glance.

Pavlovsk is an incredibly cozy, clean, and beautiful little town. It's got a free section of the M4 highway running through it, which is how we ended up in the city.

An old town in the Voronezh region, founded in 1709 as a military shipyard and fortress.

The city is located on the left bank of the Don River, at the confluence of the Osered River, 156 km from Voronezh.

Pavlovsk is a small town with a population of just over 20,000 people. When I first stopped there, I didn't even know it was one of Russia's historic towns. I was drawn to Pavlovsk after seeing the stunning architecture, and I soon discovered that the town has 43 architectural landmarks, most of which I got to see with my own eyes.

Our first stop was the Don River, and the views there are absolutely stunning! There's a city beach nearby and a boat station a little further away.

After taking in the views, we decided to drive along the main street of the city, Revolution Avenue. But we had no idea that our little stroll would turn into a several-hour-long adventure!

The further we drove into the western part of the city, the more impressive the architecture became. It was so fascinating that we parked our car near 1st of May Street and decided to take a walk.

I'm so glad we stumbled upon this amazing spot – Central Park. It's just beautiful, well-maintained, and spotless. Walking through it is a real treat. Along the central alley, there are benches with urns, and just to the left, there are narrow winding paths.

As we entered the park, we saw a monument to Lenin, and a bit further away, a large memorial complex caught our eye. Here, we found the Memorial to the Civil War, the Brothers' Grave, a monument to the Unknown Soldier, Motherland and the Weeping Stone – a symbol of the painful dark days of our history.It's hard to put into words the number of lives that were lost in the fight against fascism. This place is somber, and I felt a strong urge to reflect and pay my respects to the heroes of the past.As we walked a bit further, we heard the sound of church bells and saw the spire of the bell tower. Turning left from the main alley, we found ourselves in front of the Transfiguration Cathedral.

Just like all the churches in Pavlovsk, the cathedral was originally made of wood. In 1780, it was rebuilt in stone, and 20 years later, a three-tiered bell tower was added.

The Prereform features of the cathedral were added in the first half of the 19th century, when it was expanded by the V. I. Egorov, a Vоронеж architect.

The Transfiguration Cathedral still looks majestic and monumental, despite the fact that the windows have holes and the building looks worn out. We later found out that it's going to be reconstructed soon.

Right in front of the Transfiguration Cathedral, there are beautiful flowerbeds with pink bushes and a bell monument. This isn't just any bell, it's actually a fountain. And it's an original one, so if you hang your tongue, it'll chime. The fountain's base is made of granite, and it's got its own timeline of events related to the cathedral. You can find out, for example, that it was built multiple times. The first version didn't last long, the second one was made of wood and burned down in 1773. Almost five years ago, they put a new spire and cross on the cathedral's bell tower, which is now one of Pavlovsk's main landmarks.

We met volunteers collecting congratulatory messages for the city's anniversary and exchanged them for city-themed souvenirs.

The Central Park also has a sports field and an amazing kids' playground. It took a lot of effort to drag our kids away from there.

I was also impressed by the Youth Square in front of the 'Sovremennik' cultural center. It's a very cozy and beautiful place, and it's always bustling with locals. Music fountain in the left part of the square, and my daughter didn’t miss the chance to get wet in it.I couldn’t help but show off these stunning architectural objects in Pavlovsk, and the former theological seminary and former real school. Now, the agricultural technical school and pedagogical college are located in these buildings, respectively.Former theological seminaryFormer real schoolThe most beautiful blue building next to where we parked our car turned out to be one of the main attractions of Pavlovsk. It’s the Odnitsky merchant house.

It was built in the second half of the 1890s for the city head, merchant M.S. Odnitsky.

The building is located at the intersection of two central streets (Revolution Avenue and 1st of May Street) and its semi-circular shape fits perfectly into the architectural ensemble of the surrounding old buildings, creating a single, cohesive corner of a provincial town from the past century. The beautiful entrance porch made of intricate cast iron is a stunning feature. The porch, supported by cast iron columns, has been well-preserved to this day.

Now, the city’s local history museum is located in this building.

I have to admit that during the past summer, I had the chance to visit many interesting cities and discover new places. But Pavlovsk was my most unexpected and pleasant discovery.

I was blown away by the beautiful old architecture in this city, and it's not just that – the infrastructure is also really well-developed. There's a stadium, a sports complex, a hospital, schools, plenty of green parks, and loads of great spots for walks. And have you seen the stunning natural surroundings?

I highly recommend visiting Pavlovsk in the Voronezh region. I'm seriously impressed, and I'm giving it a solid 5 stars!

Fun facts:

Pavlovsk is home to the largest granite quarry in Europe, Pavlovskggranit, which has been reorganized into two companies: Pavlovsk Promvzryad and Pavlovsk Nerusd.

The Pavlovsk gorodishche archaeological site is just 2km from the city. Unfortunately, the original name of the settlement is unknown, and no excavations have been done. The site covers an area of around 15 hectares.

The shipyard has been in operation for a while and even built a vessel from the time of Peter the Great, which still sails on the Voronezh reservoir.
