I've driven around most of Belarus and seen both the drab, unassuming Soviet-era cities and the charming, old-world towns with their incredible pre-Soviet architecture and authentic atmosphere.

However, Vitebsk didn't quite win me over, despite spending a few weeks there. To be honest, it's a city that left a mixed impression.

Vitebsk is a city in northeastern Belarus, the administrative center of Vitebsk Region and Vitebsk District. It's located in the eastern part of the region on the Western Dvina River. The fourth most populous city in the country, with a population of 358,927 people and an area of 134.6 square kilometers. The second oldest city in Belarus after Polotsk.

Despite its respectable age and impressive history, Vitebsk doesn't feel like an ancient city. To me, it's a seamless blend of Soviet-era charm and modernity - thanks to the Slavic Bazaar.

I spent a lot of time exploring the city center - it's quite spacious, with plenty of parks and a hilly landscape. The city center itself reminded me a lot of my hometown Minsk, minus the hills, of course.

It's a bit strange, but I never actually made it to the main pedestrian street. Either it doesn't exist or I just missed it - I'm not sure.

In the city hall, there's an observation deck, but you can only go up once an hour - I didn't want to wait and saved myself 10 rubles. I did, however, take a ride on the local Ferris wheel last summer - the view was pretty standard, and the whole thing felt kinda pointless.

As for the city's main attractions, there are some nice churches and walking spaces, but that's about it. I'd give Vitebsk a low rating because we just don't click - it's one of the few Belarusian cities I actively don't enjoy visiting.

River LuchesaI'd recommend visiting Vitebsk only for the Slavic Bazaar - it's definitely worth checking out. Next time, I need to figure out the food situation - there must be somewhere decent to eat in this city.5 out of 10. Not recommended.
