A Magical Marionette Theater for the Whole Family

summarizeEditor's Summary

This Marionette Theater is a real gem in the city, offering a one-of-a-kind experience for both kids and adults. Its convenient location near the Proletarskaya metro station makes it easy to get to without worrying about parking or traffic. I took my 8.5-year-old daughter to see 'The Snow Queen', and we were thoroughly entertained. The show's clever use of lighting and puppetry really brought the story to life. The range of shows suitable for young kids means there's something for everyone, and we chose a show marked 6+ since my daughter is a bit older. The story's well-known, but the show's beginning was really unique and intriguing - the lights went out, and we saw the trolls, the Snow Queen's helpers, slowly entering the room. The puppetry was top-notch, with intricate details and expressive movements that really brought the characters to life.

I took my 8.5-year-old daughter to the Marionette Theater over the winter holidays, and it was an absolute blast.
The theater's super convenient location - just a 5-minute walk from the Proletarskaya metro station - meant we didn't have to worry about parking or traffic.
The foyer had some really cool animation featuring Father Frost and the Snow Maiden, which added to the festive atmosphere.
The show started about 30 minutes before the scheduled time, giving us a chance to grab some snacks and get settled.
The Marionette Theater offers a range of shows that are suitable for young kids, and we chose a show marked 6+ since my daughter is a bit older.
We picked 'The Snow Queen', a classic tale by Hans Christian Andersen, and it was a great choice.
The story's well-known, but the show's beginning was really unique and intriguing - the lights went out, and we saw the trolls, the Snow Queen's helpers, slowly entering the room. Their slow movements, gestures, and dance with broken mirror pieces even left us a bit spooked, creating a sense of foreboding at the start.
After that, the show began, and we saw the familiar story of Gerda and her grandmother in the Snow Queen's kingdom.
What I loved about this show was that it wasn't just a puppet show - some roles were played by actors, which added a whole new level of depth to the story.
It wasn't until Gerda went to find Kay that the puppets appeared, and they were absolutely amazing.
The decorations were truly impressive - a lightweight, airy fabric simulated a fast-moving river, where Gerda floated in a boat, hoping to find Kay. Later, this same fabric represented the Snow Queen's snowy plains.
Some of the costumes were simply stunning - the 'skirt-scene' where the puppets performed was a first for me in a puppet show, and the flowers with eyes were incredibly expressive.
The puppets themselves were so well-crafted and unique - we were particularly impressed by the vulture and the Lappish shaman, who sang in a haunting voice.
The final scene with the Snow Queen was beautifully done - she was massive and regal, holding little Kay in her arms, with Gerda below. But in the end, the power of her love defeats the Snow Queen!
We absolutely loved this heartwarming and visually stunning show.
I highly recommend visiting the Marionette Theater as soon as possible, so you can see different shows as your child grows older.
Here's a photo of the beautiful decorations.
And check out these amazing puppets!
