My Lucky Find: A Low-Maintenance Flower That Thrives in Any Room

summarizeEditor's Summary

I recently picked up this gorgeous flower at Aldi for a steal – it was just 2.5€, 50% off the original price. This little gem has been a total game changer for my rental apartment. The unique shape and bright flower spike caught my eye, and I've been impressed by its low-maintenance requirements. I've had it for a few weeks now, and it's still going strong. I'm loving the added touch of greenery it brings to my space. It's perfect for small spaces like mine, and it's been a great conversation starter with friends and family. I've also noticed that it's really easy to care for – just a quick watering every now and then, and it's good to go. The leaves are shiny and bright, giving off a 'little piece of heaven' vibe, and the pot is a nice touch. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase, and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a low-maintenance flower.

Hello everyone!
I've been trying to make my rental apartment feel more like home since moving to Germany, and one way I've been doing that is by adding some greenery – new plants are always on my shopping list.
I picked up this little gem at Aldi for a steal at just 2.5€ – it was 50% off, which is a great deal if you ask me. I chose it because of its unique shape, and the flower spike caught my eye, so I thought it wouldn't last long, which might be why it was on sale.
Once I got home, I started researching what it was. As usual, it turned out to be a tropical plant – specifically, an epiphyte (like an orchid). The leaves were a bit squished when I got it, but look how shiny they are! It's a really bright plant – a 'little piece of heaven'.
Vriesia is an epiphyte. The plant grows by attaching its root system to other plants (usually trees) and then growing on them, rather than in the ground. That being said, you can cultivate them as pot plants if you get the right soil – just make sure it's soft and well-draining.
I immediately repotted it into some fresh soil, and I'm not even sure what kind I used – probably just a standard potting mix with some orchid bark added in. It's nice and loose,
the plant's root system isn't very developed, so you don't need a deep pot – a small one will do just fine. I had a standard pot, so that's what I used...
I've got it sitting on an east-facing window in my son's room, and it's super low-maintenance - I just water it whenever I remember, and that's it. The freesia hasn't changed a bit, and it's still blooming! In short, it's not a plant, it's a find! I tried to grow a spathiphyllum in the same spot before, but I created all the right conditions and still got nothing. Now, I don't have to worry about it, even if I forget to open the blinds in the morning or water it. There's also a low-maintenance kalanchoe on the windowsill next to it - it's the perfect plant for a room where the teenager doesn't take care of it themselves. The key, as I learned from the recommendations, is not to let the plant get a draft. But our window is always open for ventilation, and it's fine.
As plants native to the hot tropics, freisias need warmth throughout the year. In the summer, the temperature should be around 23-26 degrees Celsius, while in the winter, it's okay to have it a bit cooler, around 18-20 degrees Celsius (but not below 18 degrees). They also can't handle sudden temperature changes or drafts. When it comes to lighting, they need bright, indirect light. During the cold months, it's best to move the pot to a south-facing windowsill, and when it warms up, you can move it to an east- or west-facing one. Just remember to provide some shade from direct sunlight, or the leaves might get burned, and the variegated varieties might lose their pattern. In general, freesias aren't fussy about shade. If you put it in a corner of the room (as long as it gets some indirect light), it'll still grow and thrive.
I highly recommend freisias - they'll add a pop of color to your decor without giving you any extra hassle - just repot it and forget about it. The only thing I'd suggest is planting them from seed, because the adult plants don't really change, and they're usually sold with flower stalks already.
Thanks for reading! Wishing you all happy flowers! 🎍
If you want to see how other plants have fared in my care, check out my reviews of some of my other favorite flowers:
🌿 My first flower in exile, the Zamioculcas, which thrived in a spot with limited sunlight.
🌿 The Kalanchoe is another low-maintenance and affordable option that blooms all year round with proper care.
🌿 I picked up the Hoytia Kerri on sale because of the adorable heart-shaped pot, and it's turned out to be a pretty interesting plant.
