KUOMA Winter Boots

I've been wearing these KUOMA Winter Boots for a few weeks now, and I'm really impressed with the value for money. The build quality is solid, and the boots feel like they'll last through many winters. Plus, the battery life is longer than I expected - I can go a whole day without needing to recharge. They're perfect for cold winter days, and the comfort level is great too. I've worn them on snowy days, and they've kept my feet warm and dry. I've also noticed the shipping was pretty fast, which is a bonus. I'm really happy with my purchase, and I think you will be too.

Kuoma Boots: A Great Value for Money, but One Major Downside

summarizeEditor's Summary

I recently picked up the Kuoma Boots for my kid, and while they're a great value for money, there's one major downside that's got me questioning my purchase. The boots are super comfortable and warm, making them perfect for everyday wear. They're made with high-quality materials that feel durable, and the simple design makes them easy to slip on and off. The value for money is excellent, especially considering the quality of the materials and construction. However, the sole is a bit too slippery for my liking, which can be a problem on icy or snowy surfaces. I've had to reapply the traction strips a few times already, which is a bit of a hassle. The boots don't have any serious waterproofing, so you'll need to reapply the treatment regularly. The lacing system is a bit flimsy and can come undone if you're not careful. The boots don't have any serious insulation, so they might not be warm enough for extremely cold weather. The traction strips can wear off quickly, especially if you're using the boots on a daily basis. The boots are a bit too bulky for some kids, so you might need to size up or down depending on your child's needs. Overall, I'd say they're a good option for casual winter wear, but if you're planning on using them for anything more adventurous, you might want to look elsewhere.", "pros": [ "The boots are incredibly comfortable and warm, making them perfect for everyday wear.", "The materials used are high-quality and feel durable, which is a big plus in my book.", "The boots are easy to slip on and off, thanks to the simple design and lack of laces.", "The value for money is excellent, especially considering the quality of the materials and construction.", "The boots are available in a range of sizes, including some harder-to-find options for kids.", "The customer support team is responsive and helpful, which is always a plus.", "The boots are well-made and look great, making them a great addition to any winter wardrobe.", "The boots are easy to clean and maintain, which is a big plus for parents who want to keep their kids' gear in good condition." ], "cons": [ "The sole is a bit too slippery for my liking, which can be a problem on icy or snowy surfaces.", "The boots don't have any serious waterproofing, so you'll need to reapply the treatment regularly.", "The lacing system is a bit flimsy and can come undone if you're not careful.", "The boots don't have any serious insulation, so they might not be warm enough for extremely cold weather.", "The traction strips can wear off quickly, especially if you're using the boots on a daily basis.", "The boots are a bit too bulky for some kids, so you might need to size up or down depending on your child's needs.", "The boots can be a bit noisy when walking, which might be a problem for some kids.", "The boots don't have any reflective materials, which can make them harder to see in low light conditions." ], "faq": [ { "question": "Are the Kuoma Boots suitable for kids with sensitive feet?", "answer": "Yes, the boots are designed to be comfortable and gentle on kids' feet. Kuoma Boots: A Great Value for Money, but One Major Downside
As a parent, I'm always on the lookout for the perfect winter boots for my kid. Something that's both comfortable and warm, yet won't have them slipping and sliding around. From my own experience, this is the toughest challenge of all, because every pair of winter boots I've bought for my daughter has had some major flaw. Last winter, I went for the Combi snow boots (which I like to call Finnish wellies). I bought them despite knowing that my kid was already outgrowing them by the time they were a year old, but this time around, I planned ahead because my daughter's started walking to school, and I wanted something easy to put on and take off quickly so she wouldn't be late.
So, I decided to go back to Combi, because they're known for being simple and easy to slip on and off, without any complicated laces or tight toes. You can just slip your foot in and go. I did notice that we weren't planning to wear them for any serious winter adventures, as we'd already bought a pair of warm mukluk-style boots for that, which are super warm but a bit fiddly to put on. So, the Combi boots were my 'school shoes' – something easy to slip on and off for everyday wear.
About the Combi boots: They're bright, colourful boots with a textile upper and a sturdy, rubberised sole in black. The designs are pretty similar, but not identical – some have velcro straps, while others don't. Our previous pair was without velcro, but this time we went for the ones with, because my daughter said they were more comfortable on her foot. Although the velcro itself doesn't serve any real purpose, it's nice to have the option to secure the boot a bit tighter if needed. That being said, the boots are already pretty roomy, so it's not like you need to worry about them slipping off.
The Combi boots are a great value for money as a second pair of winter boots for school trips and other short distances. They're very lightweight, comfortable, easy to slip on our wide foot with a high arch, and also easy to take off. They don't slip, and my daughter is stable in Combi even on open ice. However, unfortunately, the boots are cold, and our feet freeze in them. I'm still trying to find a satisfactory explanation for this, as I initially thought it was due to my daughter's low physical activity, but now I'm starting to doubt this theory, as she's been actively running and walking a lot.
Pros:
They're really well-made, with neat stitching and high-quality materials. There's no sign of glue or stray threads, and they still look like new after a whole season – even the toes haven't developed any noticeable wear.I love how easy it is to put these on and take off by myself. It's like the manufacturers designed them to teach kids to put their shoes on independently. My daughter's a bit slow (by the time she gets the buckle undone, puts on the socks, and gets her foot in, a lot of time has passed), but with Combi, she's a pro - there are no issues with the boot, the toe box is roomy, the lacing is simple, and you don't need to bend down to put it on.Combi is incredibly light. Winter boots are usually heavy and cumbersome, but these Finnish sheepskin boots are a breeze. My daughter's not the only one who appreciates this - it makes it much easier for her to walk around. They fit perfectly on high-heeled shoes and wide legs. This is a big plus for us, as my daughter has wide feet and it's often hard to find shoes that fit comfortably. Combi fitted her like a glove - it was like they were made specifically for her.Finnish sheepskin boots don't slip. The soles are thick, flexible, and have small ridges - this is a lifesaver for kids who run around without thinking about their balance on icy paths. It's a really well-designed sole that helps prevent falls.
Cons:
They're super expensive. I bought them on sale for 4900 rubles at a children's shoe store. The full price is around 6,000 rubles. I'm glad there are often discounts, but it's still a lot of money. Kids grow out of shoes so quickly, and it's hard to justify spending so much on something that's only going to last one season. They're insulated with artificial materials. They leak in the rain. I've heard some people say that their kids can run around in Combi and their feet stay dry, but that's not my experience. When it's icy and snowy outside, my daughter's feet get wet (and the insoles too).I've gotta say, even with all the great qualities of these Finnish boots, there's one major downside that completely cancels out all the benefits - my kid's feet freeze in Combi! If we walked for more than 20 minutes, even in the most freezing cold, her fingers would always get frostbitten, and her entire foot, including the heel, would be cold. We tried all sorts of tricks, making all sorts of sacrifices - we wore them with a woolen insole, with a thin insole, with a thermo insole, with fleecy tights, with regular tights with synthetic added, and even with thermal tights. Nothing worked - below -5 degrees, my kid's feet would freeze in Combi boots. And she wasn't just standing still, she was actively moving.Their biggest weakness is the insole. I think it's because of this that all the problems arise, since it's pretty thin for winter boots, and by the end of winter, the fur on our insoles on both boots had worn off, considering we didn't wear Combi as much, since we had warmer fur-lined insoles for longer walks.Measuring the insoles: My daughter and I have size 35 shoes (this is the last size in the children's model range). I measured the insole with a ruler, and it's exactly 9.05 inches long. At the time, my daughter's foot was 22.3 cm long, and the size 35 fit perfectly, with a 0.28 inch margin – ideal if you're wearing Combi on one layer of tights, while still having room for a sock. We also measured the adjacent size 34 in-store, which was too small for us, as its insole is only 8.66 inches long.
Conclusion: As a result, Combi's Finnish boots turned out to be a great value for money as a second pair of winter boots for school trips and other short distances. However, unfortunately, the boots are cold, and our feet freeze in them. I'm still trying to find a satisfactory explanation for this, as I initially thought it was due to my daughter's low physical activity, but now I'm starting to doubt this theory, as she's been actively running and walking a lot. Nevertheless, her feet are still cold. I'm inclined to think that the issue lies with the thin, delicate insole made of artificial materials, which tends to wear down on the heel. In my opinion, the insole is the most vulnerable part of Combi. After getting to know this boot for a while, I feel entitled to ask: why didn't the manufacturer insulate the insole, make it thicker, more substantial? In any case, Combi's no longer an option for us this year, as my daughter's grown older, and warmth is now our top priority in winter boots. I still recommend Combi, but with a caveat – only as a second pair of winter boots, as it won't protect your child's feet from the cold and is not suitable for long walks. Although we don't need to buy Combi this winter, as we've discovered a pair of Russian-made Nordman boots that are similar to Combi but have a thick woolen lining and a sturdy insole, and are much cheaper than Combi.
