I recently embarked on my first winter hike to a mountain, specifically the Khauaze peak, with its breathtaking views and nearby attractions that are a must-see.

Khauaze is a mountain in the Iшимбайский район of Bashkiria. It's a popular tourist spot, located near Makarov, off the road to Kulguno.

The name 'Khauaze' translates to 'little air' in the Bashkir language. The absolute height is 586 meters. From the observation deck at the summit, you can see the Iшимбаевское lowlands and the Kuk-Karauk waterfall. About 2 kilometers away is the Salavat Yulaev cave, and during the ascent, you can see the Tash Akhsa meadow.

Getting to Ufa takes around 2-2.5 hours. On the day our group set out to conquer Khauaze, a significant layer of snow had fallen, so we had to walk a bit longer than usual. But the winter landscapes were stunning, and no one was disappointed.

On the way to the mountain, you'll find the Salavat Yulaev cave.

But don't get your hopes up - it's not actually known if the Bashkir hero Salavat Yulaev hid in this cave from the tsar's authorities. What's known is that the scenes for a film about Salavat Yulaev were shot here.

And here's the Khauaze Mountain itself.

The ascent to the mountain took around 2 hours on average, with fresh snow covering the trail. There were some gentler sections, but mostly it was a mix of varying inclines.

Midway through the ascent, I came across the Tash Aksa - Stone Garden meadow. Unfortunately, I couldn't fully appreciate its beauty as the stones were buried under snow.

However, that disappointment was quickly compensated by the breathtaking views that started to open up closer to the summit.

Just a bit higher, and you're treated to an incredible view of the Bashkirian Shihans.

The sunlit, snow-covered mountain - Toratau, the most famous of the Shihans - is a sight to behold. And just to the left, hiding behind a bush, is the Shihan Kushtau.

Nu, and the views from the very top were simply breathtaking.

There's nothing quite like standing at cloud level and feeling that rush of excitement! I've got no idea why they call this mountain 'low air' – it's surrounded by endless skies.

The sense of elation is palpable – it's as if the 2-hour climb was just a distant memory! The descent was a lot easier, but don't be fooled – I still had to be on my toes the whole time. There were a few close calls with slipping on the snow, and even a couple of minor falls. Luckily, no harm done!

And to cap off our adventure, we visited the Kuk-Karauk waterfall, which was completely frozen over and covered in snow – I only recognized it because of the sign. The pictures of what it looks like in full flow are on display nearby. I'm already planning a return trip in the spring to see it in all its glory.

So, all in all, it was a great way to spend a weekend – getting some exercise and fresh air really does recharge your batteries. And the memories will last a lot longer than a week!
