Disappointing, but Not What I Expected - Mostly Autobiography, Not Practical Tips

summarizeEditor's Summary

I was really hoping for a book that'd give me some concrete tips on how to navigate small talk, but what I got was mostly Larry King's autobiography. Don't get me wrong, he's a fascinating guy and all, but if you're looking for practical advice on how to talk to anyone, anywhere, anytime, you might be disappointed. I used it for a week and was expecting some actionable strategies, but it's more of a 'how I did it' kind of book. The writing is engaging, and there are some great quotes from famous people, but for me, it was a total letdown. I was expecting a book that'd give me some real-world advice on how to make conversation, but what I got was a bunch of stories about Larry King's life. I'm not saying it's a bad book, it's just not what I was looking for.

I've always struggled with small talk when meeting new people. With close friends, you know how to shut off the verbal faucet, but with someone new, you're left speechless and don't know what to say. So, when I saw this book on Ozon that promised to solve any conversation problems, I thought it was just what I needed. And I ordered it, especially since the price was reasonable.
Larry King is one of the most famous people in the US - he hosted a popular talk show on CNN for years, and having him as a guest was a huge honor for politicians, business leaders, athletes, and artists. In his book, 'How to Talk to Anyone, Anywhere, Anytime,' Larry King shares his secrets with readers.

I didn't check the book's parameters when I ordered it, so I was surprised - it's tiny. And the cover is thin. Now it makes sense why it's so cheap.
Design is nice - bright and eye-catching. And it's very concise at the same time. The acidic pink-orange background and purple blocks with the title are a great combination.
How to Talk to Anyone, Anywhere, Anytime, Larry KingThe back side has a brief description of who Larry King is and a small annotation.
How to Talk to Anyone, Anywhere, Anytime, Larry KingPages are thin and white.
How to Talk to Anyone, Anywhere, Anytime, Larry KingI liked the font - it's quite large and clear. The structure is good - there are many headings and subheadings, and the lists are well-formatted.How to Talk to Anyone, Anywhere, Anytime, Larry KingI was expecting a bunch of tips and advice for introverts, and they are there, but not in the quantity I was hoping for. This is more of a biographical book, an autobiography, really.
Larry reminisces a lot about his youth and his conversations with interesting people, and there are some funny anecdotes. And that makes up about 70% of the book. The other 30% are tips on how to be a good conversationalist. But there aren't any super-new truths here.
There are some recommendations on finding topics, mannerisms for different types of events, and business etiquette - it's a bit of everything. The book describes different life situations and gives advice on how to handle them - not just the conversation itself, but also body language, tone of voice, and even dress.
What I liked was the way the book is written. It's light, lively, and has a nice sense of humor. I read it in two days. You could read it in a few hours if you wanted to. Even some of the more obvious advice is interesting to read.
What I took away from it
How to Talk to Anyone, Anywhere, Anytime, Larry KingI did pick up a few useful things for myself. The book made me think about how my conversation partner might be feeling when we get stuck in a conversation. They're just as human as I am - and they might be feeling awkward too. Now I try to take the initiative in conversations more often. But it doesn't always work out
I also found the advice to be genuine and say what I'm feeling helpful. Before, I would sometimes get stuck in awkward situations where I couldn't keep the conversation going, and people would think I was being condescending. Now I can just say I'm feeling awkward, and often the other person will admit to feeling the same way, and we'll both end up laughing and the conversation will pick up.
The most important advice from the book is that to have good conversations, you need to talk more. You need to get more experience. And that really does help. The more you talk to new people, the easier it gets. And now I feel a lot more confident. Although there are still people I meet who I just don't know what to talk to them about - I tell myself that's just not my crowd
The advice in this book is simple, but it works.
How to Talk to Anyone, Anywhere, Anytime, Larry KingWho it's for
It's hard to say who this book is for. It's not exactly a textbook. It's not super-useful. But if you do struggle with conversations, you might find it helpful.
It's also a great book to take on a trip - especially for a train ride. The format is perfect for that.

The Art of Conversation, by Larry King 🖤 My Take
I have to admit, the book didn't quite live up to my expectations. But I can't say I'm disappointed either - it's a real page-turner, easy to read, and finished in one sitting. I did manage to pick up some useful tips for myself, though. I'm not exactly the life of the party, and I still get nervous in new situations, but in some cases, it's definitely made things easier for me.
So, don't go in expecting the world - it's not that groundbreaking. But if you're looking for a light, entertaining read for a couple of nights, it's worth a shot.
