Heart of Parm

This 2022 film is a total gem. I mean, it's a great choice if you're looking for a movie that won't break the bank but still delivers on value for money. The storyline's got some real depth, and the cinematography is seriously impressive - it's like you're right there in the Italian countryside.

♦ I'm a big fan of good movies, and I'm excited to share my thoughts on one that really stood out to me! ♦
I was torn between watching a biopic about Peter the Great and a pseudo-historical epic called 'Heart of Parma', so I re-watched all the trailers and was blown away by the latter. It's got it all: moral depth, stunning visuals, a touch of religion, romance... the works! And, of course, we ended up watching 'Heart of Parma' and weren't disappointed once.
The story is a sweeping epic that takes place in ancient Parma (yes, that's where the Permyaks still call their ancestral homeland) and follows the ruling princes as they battle against idolatry and paganism. There's also a forbidden love story, plenty of action scenes, and a tough choice between 'what I need to do' and 'what I want to do'. I used it for a week and the build quality surprised me. The buttons feel solid and the battery lasts longer than I expected.
▶ The plot ▶
Russian Prince Mikhail and young Tiche are from different worlds, different cultures, and different faiths. Their love seems impossible, but it overcomes all obstacles and sets off a chain reaction. Now, Mikhail's future depends on it – the fate of his native Parma, a land steeped in the power of ancient, bloodthirsty gods. Here, heroes and ghosts, princes and shamans, Voguls and Muscovites clash. And giving up your life isn't as scary as choosing between loyalty, duty, and the love of your life.
Let me just say that movies like this are desperately needed in our time. They show us the importance of moral values and how we should live our lives. They remind us not to betray, to put our country's fate first, and to cherish our own love and life. After watching it, you'll have plenty to think about.
I really love how the story unfolds from the Prince of Perm's early days on earth to his later years, with all his battles in other cities and defending Perm, the clashes with the Khans, and his struggles for foreign love. At first, the Prince comes across as a young boy, and as the story goes on, his character toughens up and matures, having gone through unimaginable challenges.
Of course, his bravery and unbreakable spirit are qualities you'd want to see not only in rulers, but also in the men closest to you. The Prince is an ideal model of a true man and a wise leader.
I even shed a few tears during the film, when injustice took over. And in the battle scenes, I'd sometimes close my eyes, bracing myself for the impending carnage. But it was all beautifully and memorably done.
▶ The Story Behind the Film 'Heart of Perm' ▶
The film is an adaptation of the historical novel by talented writer Alexei Ivanov, who's a real expert on the history of his native region. Years ago, Alexei initiated the 'Heart of Perm' festival, which was an ethnographic sketch featuring local markets, role-playing performances, and more.

Heart of Parma was an annual festival held in Perm Krai, near the city of Cherdyń, from 2006 to 2009. The initiative for the festival belonged to writer Alexei Ivanov, author of the eponymous novel[1]. The organizers of the first festival were the Center for Cultural Projects 'Heart of Parma' and the administration of the Cherdyńsky District. From 2007, the festival was funded from the budget of Perm Krai. The festival lasted for three days in July on three platforms: music, folk crafts market, and role-playing games. The Heart of Parma festival attracted a large number of tourists to the Cherdyńsky District, led to the establishment of the first university representation in the city, and also led to the allocation of funds and volunteers for the restoration and repair of monuments in the Cherdyńsky District.
From what I understood from the author's biography, creating the film was the icing on the cake of his historical and literary activities, as Alexei spent his entire conscious life restoring historical monuments in Perm Krai and studying its history from ancient times. That's why, in my opinion, the film turned out to be so comprehensive in its themes.
▶ Cast ▶
I'm not really familiar with Russian modern actors, so I was a bit lost. But for me, that's actually a plus, as new faces always make the film more interesting. And the acting was pretty good, I was satisfied with the movie.
Playing the role of Prince Mikhail Ermolaevich
Alexander Kuznetsov
I had never seen him before, but it turns out he was in that international film 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets', so he's a well-known face beyond our borders. At first, I wasn't sure how I felt about the young prince's character, but when the creators decided to reveal his personality through his experiences over the years, he really grew on me. The actor did a great job showing the character's development, his toughness, and his priorities in life. He showed a strong, confident person.
Playing the role of the great prince's wife, a stunningly beautiful and unique actress
Elena Ermakova
The actress's character, her deep eyes, and dark hair...and what a bold performance. She nailed the role of a shamanic tribe member and a disobedient pagan. I was blown away by her in the trailer, and I was eagerly waiting for the film's release, all thanks to her.
Playing the role of the great prince's loyal vanguard, who never wavered in his loyalty
Sergei Puskepalyis
Unfortunately, this was one of his last roles...and what a talented actor he was. I'm truly saddened that we won't see him in any more great films.
Playing the role of Aychel, the great prince's wife's mentor
Rosa Khayrullina
I've gotta say, there are a ton of actors in this film, and it's a real crowd-pleaser. I won't name-check everyone, but I think the casting was on point – each actor brought their A-game and nailed their role.
▶ Visuals, sound, atmosphere ▶
The cinematography is simply stunning, and I'd highly recommend watching it on the big screen to get the full effect. The Russian wilderness is breathtaking – the endless, icy forests that seem to stretch on forever, and the devastating impact of winter on the land.
ImageThere are some seriously epic battle scenes, and just the right amount of mysticism. The time jumps and non-linear storytelling really add to the complexity of the narrative.
I've got to give props to the makeup and costume departments – they must have put in an insane amount of work to get everything just right. When you're dealing with a project of this scope, it's clear that every aspect of production has to be meticulously planned.
▶ Overall impression ▶
As a huge fan of historical dramas (even if they're pseudo-historical), I've always been fascinated by the attention to detail that goes into recreating old settings, clothing, and mannerisms. But this film takes it to the next level. It's not just about the grandeur of the Russian wilderness or the opulence of the royal court – it's about the human struggle to make tough choices between personal and national interests. I found myself deeply invested in the story of the Great Prince, who's forced to navigate the complexities of ruling a nation while keeping his own heart intact.
I have to say, it's been ages since I've seen a movie that's so morally grounded. Sure, there are some parts that are a bit too much for my taste (I had to avert my eyes during some of the ritual scenes), but overall, it's really great and deserves to be shown to kids for educational purposes - as long as you censor the sex scenes and explicit violence, of course.
I'm giving it a solid 5 out of 5 stars and I'll definitely be rewatching it. I've even added it to my personal collection.
