My Honest Review of the Dyson Vacuum: Is It Worth the Hype?

summarizeEditor's Summary

I live in a 50-square-meter apartment with a mix of laminate and tile flooring, and a couple of bath mats. I'm not exactly a neat freak, but I do want my home to be clean and tidy. I used to rely on a robot vacuum, but it was loud, slow, and a pain to maneuver. I also tried a traditional vacuum with a cord, hose, and dustbin, but it was a hassle to lug around. That's when I decided to get a wireless vacuum – and I'm glad I did. The Dyson vacuum has been a total lifesaver for me. It's easy to use, lightweight, and has a sleek design. Plus, it's got a wall-mounting option, which is super convenient. But is it worth the hype? Let's dive in and find out.

Getting started:
I live in a 50-square-meter apartment with a mix of laminate and tile flooring in the bathroom, and a couple of bath mats. Oh, and my incredibly fluffy but utterly shedding cat.
My previous vacuuming experiences:
I used a robot vacuum that was okay, but it was loud, slow, and a pain to maneuver. I mostly used it in enclosed spaces to get the job done. I also tried a traditional vacuum with a cord, hose, and dustbin, but it was a hassle to lug around. And let's be honest, the traditional broom – quick and easy, but not exactly the most hygienic option.
The deciding factor was getting a wireless vacuum. A friend raved about her five-year-old Dyson, and their customer support, which sent her a free new brush when she simply asked how to clean the old one.
My BlasterI initially planned to buy the $20 version, but after reading reviews and comparing models, I ended up deciding I needed the latest model. As of now, there are two v11 models: the standard series v11 (2019) and the same v11 with an 'extra' prefix – that's the 2020 model, which is more powerful and comes with interchangeable batteries. The two models differ in their configurations. There's a version with extra batteries, additional attachments, and a parking station. After much deliberation, I decided I didn't need any of those extras, and if I did, I could always buy them separately.
The cat wasn't too thrilled about meeting meI have to give credit to Dyson for their awesome customer service – specifically their video conference feature. I used it to chat with their team and it really helped me decide on the right model. They walked me through the differences between the models, showed me the vacuum in action, and answered all my questions.
I ended up buying the vacuum from MVideeo because they had the fastest shipping.
The box was way more compact than I expected. I loved how everything was packed – no excess plastic, just cardboard, and nothing was loose. Not even a single strip of tape was left behind. So, the unboxing experience was a real treat.
The accessoriesBefore I could use the vacuum for the first time, I was recommended to fully charge it. I had about 40% charge when I opened the box. Charging from 0 to 100% takes around 3.5-4 hours. You can see the charge level while it's in use and while it's charging.
Charge levelAll the brushes are washable, but make sure to dry them thoroughly before using them again. One drop of water can kill your Dyson, as the manual and customer support keep reminding me. The two-year warranty doesn't cover any water damage.
I decided to put the device to the test after a full charge. First up was cleaning the filter in my drying machine:
Filter before
Filter after
Filter before
Filter after. I didn't quite finish cleaning it, as I noticed it was still dampNext, I tackled my IKEA floor lamp, which had been a pain to clean due to all the dust:

The Dyson before use You can see the track where the Dyson has already been The Dyson's brush roll after cleaning is super fluffy The small brush attachment after cleaning an sheepskinSo, what can I say in summary:
1. The battery life is perfect for cleaning my apartment a couple of times a day, and it still has some juice left for the next day. I'm using the eco or auto mode most of the time. I only switch to turbo mode for the carpets, as they get sucked in really quickly – you have to hold them tight not to lose them. The cat litter and food on the floor get picked up easily on the eco mode.
2. I'm really happy with the attachments – they're super useful, and I use them all the time. The soft roller is great for my laminate floors, and the small brush is perfect for the carpets. The crevice tool is also super handy – it gets into all the nooks and crannies, like the baseboards and other hard-to-reach areas.
3. I really love the screen that shows the remaining battery life.
4. The charging dock is super compact and convenient – I can just forget about it and stick it to the wall if I want to.
5. The dustbin is amazing – it's so easy to empty, and it's a great feature that I didn't expect from a wireless vacuum.
I'm on my second clean of the day, and I've managed to pick up a decent amount of fluff and a ton of tiny debris Honestly, it's not a necessity. You don't have to splurge on a pricey model for everyday floor cleaning – a more affordable version would do the trick. Of course, it can't hold a candle to a corded vacuum in terms of power, but I don't have the kind of mess that needs a heavy-duty upright. So, I'm super happy with my purchase – it's been a game-changer for my daily cleaning routine. I'm actually thinking of getting a steam mop too, and that'll make keeping the house spotless a breeze.
June 2, 2020 – I've since bought and tested the steam mop, and you can read my review here
