A Bummer of a Stay at the Cosmos Novosibirsk Hotel

We recently spent a few days at the Cosmos Novosibirsk hotel and wanted to share our honest experience.

Our family trip to Novosibirsk centered around visiting the Akvamir water park, and we remembered the Cosmos hotel chain from a previous stay in Moscow. When booking our room, we were happy to find a special promotion on International Women's Day - a complimentary bottle of champagne and two Pavlova pastries in our 'Romantic' room, which was priced the same as the standard room. We also received flyers with a 15% discount on the water park ticket, which was perfect for our trip.

Since we were traveling with kids, we booked two rooms. The hotel's location is super convenient - it's just a 5-minute walk from the train station.

We arrived in Novosibirsk by train in the morning and tried to check in early, but our room wasn't ready yet. We left our luggage with the administrator and headed out to grab some breakfast and then to the water park. Unfortunately, the discount on the water park ticket was only valid for two types of visits - either 3 hours or a full day. Since 3 hours seemed too short and a full day might be too long, we opted for a 5-hour visit. But that wasn't the only disappointment - I'll write about our experience at the water park here.

After the water park, we returned to the hotel and checked in. Our rooms were on different floors (we actually requested that so we and the kids could have some peace and quiet). Since the Romantic room was priced the same as the standard room, we ordered both rooms with this option. In the evening, we collected the champagne and pastries from the restaurant. The kids got their pastries, and we got the champagne. We took the second bottle, of course. It was really nice to come back to our room, enjoy the pastries, and have a glass of champagne after a busy day.

One thing that really stood out was the room numbers - they were all the same status, but they were vastly different. The kids' room had a bigger number and a door in the room that was closed. Maybe it was a refurbished room or something like that. Our room was much smaller, I'd say it was cramped. And overall, I got the impression that the room had seen better days or wasn't exactly the freshest. It was clean, but somehow it just didn't feel right. The curtains were dirty with big stains, the magazine table had a scratched surface, and there was a piece of wallpaper missing.

I have to say, for a 4-star hotel, it was a bit of a letdown. And to make matters worse, we stayed at a 3-star hotel on Lake Baikal just a month prior, and that place was absolutely fantastic. Here's my review of that one.

Another thing that bugged me about the room was the shower cubicle. It was pretty cramped and only partially separated from the rest of the bathroom with a wall. When you're showering, water splashes all over the bathroom floor. And after that, there's a big puddle on the floor, making it hard to use the toilet. Plus, our daughter told us that she had the same issue in her room, so it's not just me being picky.

The Bed

We booked a King-size bed, and it was indeed big, but at some point, we realized that it was actually two separate mattresses underneath the topper. Not exactly what you'd expect from a hotel, if you ask me. It was a bit of a letdown.

The hotel is right next to the train station, and you can see the train tracks and hear the trains passing by. But we kept the window open all night, and it didn't bother us at all.

That's the view you get. But it's not from our room, it's from the common corridor on the same floor.

Breakfast

Breakfast was included in the room rate. It was served until 11:00. We went down an hour before it ended, but it turned out some food was already gone. I'd read about hotels where food runs out, and I experienced it firsthand. It wasn't the best impression, to say the least. What mattered to me was the lack of pancakes. They did appear later, and I managed to grab a couple, but when the kids saw me with them and wanted some too, they were gone again. The pancake hunt was on.

The same thing happened with utensils. First, there were no spoons, then the forks ran out. We even asked a staff member to bring some, but we had to wait for at least 6 minutes. Not a pleasant experience.

The food was okay, some dishes were even tasty, but there were some rotten tomatoes in the salad.

After breakfast, we headed to collect our belongings and check out.

The administrator was told we were leaving, but nobody checked the room.

We still had some time before the train, so we handed over our stuff to the administrator, just like when we arrived, and went for a stroll around the city.

The cost of one night's stay in our room came to around 6000 rubles.

So, what's the verdict? It wasn't all bad, but the thought crossed my mind that I wished the head office team would come and inspect how things are run here.

It seems that if you claim to be a 4-star hotel, you should deliver on that promise, especially when compared to others.
