Chucky TV Show Review: A Disappointing Take on the Classic Character

I've been a fan of Chucky, the killer doll, for as long as I can remember, and the first movie came out way before I was born, back in 1988!

I'll never forget the first time I watched the original Child's Play movie. The story really scared me, and as a result, there was a new sequel every decade for the next ten years. They were especially active in the 90s, churning out three movies that together with the first one were playing non-stop on TV when I was a kid. Looking back, the original Chucky was seriously creepy. I mean, I didn't even watch the whole movie - just a few snippets were enough to freak me out. I remember having this inner conflict: 'It's a movie about a doll. Dolls are for kids. So I can watch it. But this doll is just too creepy! But I've seen all the other kids' movies a million times - maybe I should give this a try?' It was a real dilemma back in the day, when our only options for kids' content were a handful of TV channels and VHS tapes that had been rewound to death. Back then, it was like a mini celebration to watch something new.

But as I grew older, my desire to know what other mischief the red menace was up to, aside from the stuff that had been bugging my kid's mind, was pretty much non-existent – until I stumbled upon a review for the 2021 series Chucky.I suddenly wanted to check out this modern take on the character, despite my love for all things cinematic nostalgia.THE SERIESAs of now, the series consists of 1 season with 8 episodes, each around 40 minutes long. Expect season 2 to drop in the fall of 2022.

and even when they do find out, it's only for a short period. What I appreciate is that the 14-year-old actors playing the kids are actually around the same age as their characters.

I've got some mixed feelings about Alivia Elin Lind - she looks a bit older than her colleagues, maybe it's the makeup or that awkward phase when girls catch up to boys.

I have to say, the actress's performance also had a big impact on me. She came across as more convincing than the other kids. According to the plot, she plays the role of Lexi, the school's resident mean girl. The main target of her schemes is the main character, Jake - a guy with some quirks, doubts about his orientation, and family and financial problems. For a spoiled rich girl whose mom is the mayor, he's the perfect target for bullying, even though Jake is actually Junior's cousin. I was a bit disappointed with the way the actor, Zachary Arthur, portrayed Jake. Sometimes he managed to nail an emotion, but for the most part, he didn't quite convince me.Looking back, I think a more capable actor would've been perfect for this role - Björn Arnarson, who played Devon.

I'm not sure how the creators missed the opportunity to make their project even more inclusive.

As for the latter, the main character's orientation is no longer a non sequitur, but it's still a sensitive topic that deserved more thoughtful exploration.

Overall, I've come to the conclusion that the show's attempt to tackle LGBTQ+ issues was more about ratings and views than genuine tolerance.

When you combine this with other social themes, the story feels overcrowded and underdeveloped.IMPRESSIONSFrom an aesthetic standpoint, the show looks great: the landscapes are beautiful, the houses have amazing interiors, and the style is on point.

The young actors do a pretty good job playing their roles, even considering my gripes with the main character. Chucky moved into this adorable doll, man, I really wanted one like that! I mean, I thought I could get away without one after seeing a similar-looking one on Avito for 90k. I liked that the storyline had enough room for scenes that showed Chucky's past as a human, when he was still Charles Lee Ray. The way they brought the doll to life was pretty believable, no over-the-top graphics. But that's it for me. I don't feel like trashing it, the storyline is pretty lame! The plot is poorly thought out and the characters are underdeveloped... The biggest letdown for me was the sheer number of plot holes, glaring plot errors, and characters behaving in ways that just didn't make sense.

The constant questions of "what", "why", and "how" about all these nonsensical moments were always on my mind. Initially, I was hoping that the show would somehow "get its act together" in the next episodes, but unfortunately, the subsequent plot developments only made things even more absurd. Take the whole Chucky relocation idea, for example - it looked like something the writer thought of on the spot.And to top it all off, the disappointment of seeing Charles Lee Ray in the flesh.

I was really excited about the idea behind this storyline, but unfortunately, the execution didn't quite live up to my expectations.

The live-action character just didn't work for me - he came across as really unpleasant and completely unrealistic. THE VERDICTI think the core idea was really promising, but the execution fell short.

Let's be honest, the creators were clearly trying to milk the franchise for all it's worth. I'd give this show a solid three out of five, and I'm not exactly holding my breath for a sequel.If you're looking for something similar, I'd recommend checking out these smaller shows that I actually enjoyed:

"The Pretender" from 2019, which I won't bore you with the details of its unique plot based on a real-life story;
