Hydro Grip Primer by Milk Makeup

I've tried my fair share of primers, but the Hydro Grip Primer by Milk Makeup really delivers. It's all about creating a solid base for your makeup application, and this one does just that - it's hydrating, it's easy to apply, and it makes a huge difference in the longevity of your makeup. Trust me, you won't be disappointed!

Budget Primer Dupes Fall Short of the Originals

summarizeEditor's Summary

I've tried the budget dupes of the Milk primer from Catrice, Essence, and other brands, and while they're okay, they just can't match up to the original. The Milk primer itself has a nice texture, comes in three sizes, and has a pump, but it's still pretty pricey. If you're looking for a budget-friendly option, you might want to consider other brands. The Milk primer is a solid choice, but it's not worth the splurge for me.

I've gotta say, this primer is the OG that started the whole jelly primer trend, and now you see brands like Catrice, Essence, and others churning out their own budget-friendly versions. I've tried Catrice, I've got Essence, and I've got a few other brands in my collection too. But I wanted to try Milk, so I got the mini size.

PACKAGING
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The packaging looks the same across all sizes. The only difference is the size and shape of the bottle itself. There are three sizes to choose from:
Full Size: 1.52 FL OZ / 45 ML Midi: 1 FL OZ / 30 ML Mini: 0.33 FL OZ / 10 ML
And the prices are $38, $30, and $20 respectively. Even the mini size has a pump, which is a nice touch.
Ingredients:
Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Water, Water (Aqua, Eau), Glycerin, PEG-150 Distearate, Alcohol Denat., Polyglyceryl-10 Eicosanedioate/Tetradecanedioate, Diglycerin, PVP, Benzyl Alcohol, Sorbitol, Pullulan, Inositol, Betaine, Carbomer, Maltose, Xylitol, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Phytate, Benzophenone-4, Dehydroacetic Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Agave Tequilana Stem Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Niacinamide, Propylene Glycol, Panthenol, Vegetable Amino Acids, Cannabis Sativa (Hemp) Seed Extract, Opuntia Ficus-Indica Flower Extract, Prunus Avium Flower Extract, Citric Acid, Benzoic Acid, Yellow 5 (CI 19140), Blue 1 (CI 42090), Red 33 (CI 17200).
The plastic bottle is lightweight, and the pump works smoothly. I've got no complaints about the packaging at all.

FEATURES
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The primer itself has a slightly melted jelly texture, similar to aloe vera gel. It's a bit thinner, so it's a bit more runny. The product is a bit murky (greenish) and moves slowly in the bottle.
When you squeeze out the product, it's got a weird greenish tint to it. But in small amounts, it's totally transparent - just a clear gel.
It melts into the skin really nicely, so it spreads evenly without any effort. The texture feels great when you apply it - it's just like applying aloe vera gel.
It absorbs pretty quickly, but not instantly. Once it's absorbed, it gets a bit sticky. But the stickiness fades away after a while. I mention this because some people say that this stickiness 'glues' the tone in place. But if that's the case, then what's it gluing if the stickiness disappears in the first place?
Once it's absorbed, the product is completely invisible. But when it's fresh, it gives the skin a nice, dewy glow - because the skin is still a bit damp.

USAGE AND EFFECT
🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈
I wasn't a fan of the primer. It's got a decent formula, but it's not as good as some of the other products I've tried. It behaves the same way on my face as it did on my hand - it doesn't provide any significant moisturizing benefits. If you're trying to catch up on moisturizing with a primer, it's not going to cut it, especially on dry skin. I've got oily skin, but sometimes it gets dry, and this primer doesn't help - the tone just sits on top of it, accentuating all the things you don't want to accentuate. To be honest, I thought this one would be more moisturizing, but it's not.
Vision-wise, it's not noticeable once it's absorbed. But when it's fresh, it gives the skin a nice, dewy glow - because the skin is still a bit damp.
Before primer (toner, serum, lightweight day cream):
When I applied the primer, it was still wet, and you can see the shine. But that's just because my skin was still damp.
It's sticky, but it's worth waiting - the stickiness and shine go away after a while. There's no film left on my skin.
I wouldn't say it helps with longevity, and if my skin was already in bad shape, it wouldn't make a difference with or without the primer.
It doesn't even out the texture (and no jelly primer does that for me, unless it's a special smoothing one).
The worst part is that the color tends to slide off the edges of my face with this primer. Around my hairline, near my ears. I made a mistake with my skincare routine, but with other primers and the same routine, I don't get this issue.
Applying foundation by hand in this case isn't ideal, as the streaks aren't exactly flattering. I can try using a sponge, but I usually don't have time to get it right, with all the rinsing and cleaning.
And if I'm not expecting any skincare benefits or intense moisturizing from the primer (although I do hope it adds a bit of hydration) - the streaks are a major turn-off for me. I'm glad I got the mini size, as something in the formula just didn't work for me. It happens, but it's a bummer.
