John Martin Bourgogne des Flandres

This Belgian-style ale from John Martin is a real treat - it's got a rich, complex flavor profile that's sure to please even the most discerning beer drinkers. I'm talking notes of dark fruit, spices, and a hint of bitterness that'll keep you coming back for more.

Why I'm Hooked on Belgian Beers - My Favorite Burgundy from Flanders

summarizeEditor's Summary

I'm not a fan of dark beer, but somehow, I just couldn't resist trying John Martin (Br. Timmermans) Bourgogne des Flandres while I was in Belgium. My husband ended up getting hooked on it after that, and now he's always buying it. It's sold in a 0.75L bottle, like champagne, but it's also available in the standard Belgian size - 0.33L. We just call it 'Burgundy' at home. I've been drinking it for a while now, and I have to say, it's a really great beer. The unique flavor profile is a blend of old and young beer, which gives it a pretty complex taste. The 5% ABV is perfect for a beer that's not too strong but still packs a punch. I love the fact that it's easy to find in Russia, which is a big plus for me. Overall, I think it's a great value for money, and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who's looking for a new beer to try.

I'm not a fan of dark beer, but somehow, while I was in Belgium, I just couldn't resist trying it. And my husband ended up getting hooked on it after that, now he's always buying it.
This beer is John Martin (Br. Timmermans) Bourgogne des Flandres.
Strength: 5%
Price: around 500 rubles for a 0.75L bottle.
Bourgogne des Flandres holds a special place on the Belgian beer market. It's a typical example of Flemish tradition of blending beer, where old and young beer are mixed with skill to achieve the perfect balance.
We just call it 'Burgundy' at home.
It's sold in a 0.75L bottle, like champagne, but it's also available in the standard Belgian size - 0.33L.
I bought this bottle in Russia, so there's a Russian description.
The ingredients are the same on the Belgian bottles:
Don't confuse the two breweries: there's Brugge, and this beer is from John Martin N.V.
A bit of history:
'Bourgogne des Flandres' translates to 'Burgundy from Flanders' in French. This beer was brewed in the early 20th century by a skilled brewer, Van Houtrev. He tried to create a new, unique beer with a distinctive taste. In the process, he decided to combine top-fermented beer with lambic from Belgium. And he succeeded in creating a refined drink with a one-of-a-kind flavor.
I was surprised to learn that this beer is made by two breweries in Brussels and Bruges, each crafting their own component for the drink.
This dark beer has a certain similarity to wine - it just doesn't feel like the beer we're used to.
It's not just brewed in a factory - it's aged for over eight months in wooden barrels. The result is an amazing reddish-brown beer with low alcohol content and a rich aftertaste. When I first tried it, I was drinking it from our usual glasses, but then we realized that Belgian beer is meant to be enjoyed in the proper glassware - and it really does make a difference. The flavor just opens up more.
The beer has a small head, and it doesn't have that bitter taste.
The beer itself has a sour-sweet flavor, without any bitterness. You can definitely taste the fruit and wood notes.
As for the aftertaste, it starts off sweet, almost like caramel, and then leaves a beer bitterness on your palate.
It's easy to drink, and you can have multiple glasses.
For a snack, I'd recommend nuts, cheese, and maybe even chips. But definitely not fish or crackers.
Would I recommend this beer? Absolutely to dark beer enthusiasts - but if you prefer light beers, it's worth a shot.
I've also reviewed some other amazing beers, including:
1. Lindemans Framboise - raspberry-blackthorn
2. Lindemans Kriek - cherry
Next up, I've got to give a shoutout to some of my favorite beers I've tried recently.
3. Lindemans Cassis is a blackcurrant lambic that really hits the spot.
4. Grimbergen Rouge is another Belgian beer that's widely available in Russia.
5. Sukhumi is a beer from Abkhazia that's definitely worth trying.
6. Kauno alus Vysninis is another Lithuanian beer that caught my eye.
7. And finally, I have to mention Floris Chocolat - that chocolate flavor is just incredible...
Thanks to everyone who stopped by!
