My Artex Wallpaper Nightmare: A Reluctant DIY Success Story

summarizeEditor's Summary

I recently took on the challenge of installing Artex's thick, lilac-colored vinyl wallpapers on a non-woven backing in my living room. I'd already had a disappointing experience with water-resistant paper-backed wallpapers on my kitchen, so I was hoping for better results. The process was tougher than I expected, but the end result is actually pretty great. I'm still getting used to the new look, but I'm proud of myself for tackling it on my own. It's not the easiest DIY project, but the end result is worth the effort.

Hello fellow wallcovering enthusiasts!
I recently decided to give my walls a makeover this summer, and I'm still reeling from the experience. First things first, I tackled the kitchen, and then I moved on to the living room. I'd already shared my experience with water-resistant paper-backed wallpapers on my kitchen, and let's just say I was pretty disappointed with the results. The papers would either tear or smudge, so for the living room, I opted for something more substantial – thick, pricey, warm lilac-colored vinyl wallpapers on a non-woven backing.
I'd never tackled wide wallpapers before, so I was a bit apprehensive about the process. A friend assured me it was possible to apply wide wallpapers on your own, and I went ahead and bought these "heavy" (in every sense of the word) wallpapers. Let me tell you, they're actually pretty lightweight and not as easy to apply as I thought they'd be!
Here's how the wallpapers look.
The packaging is airtight, and the label has the product name. I was expecting a lot more "oomph" in the packaging, but I guess that's just me.
The manufacturer's instructions say to use a special adhesive for vinyl wallpapers on a non-woven backing. I wish they'd included a few more tips and tricks, but I guess that's just part of the DIY experience.
I ended up using two different types of adhesive.
Both adhesives did their job really well, but I'm not sure if I'd recommend using two different types.Kitchen wallpaper installation instructions are located on the back of the label. I wish they'd included more detailed instructions, but I guess that's just part of the DIY experience.
I measured the length of the wallpaper, cut it, applied the adhesive, folded it in half for better absorption. It was a bit of a process, but I'm glad I did it.
While the wallpaper was absorbing the adhesive, I applied the wall coating. It was a bit of a process, but I'm glad I did it.
I applied the two wallpapers edge to edge, then started smoothing them out. Next thing I knew, air bubbles started popping up here and there, and I couldn't get rid of them.
The instructions said to smooth out the applied wallpaper with a special roller or notched trowel from the middle to the edges until the air bubbles disappear. Yeah, right.
A friend who's handy suggested I buy a smoothing roller with a rubber edge, which helped me smooth out those pesky air bubbles.
But then another issue arose – I had to spack the wall, with big bumps. I had to learn how to do that too!
I spent a total of 2 tins of Volma jointing compound, weighing around 10kg, on the wall. It was a lot of work, but I'm glad I did it.
I've got to give a shoutout to my trusty sidekick Mii for helping me out here!
And here's what my wall looks like now:
Now it's just a matter of drying and putting up the wallpaper. And here's what the wallpaper looks like, all stuck up:
So, to sum it up, I can confidently say that putting up wide wallpaper is a challenge, but it's doable! Good luck, and may the odds be ever in your favor!I'd give the quality of these wallpapers 4 stars. They're not perfect, but they're definitely worth it.
I'd probably give them 5 stars and a Sutulov Order if they included more detailed instructions and better packaging.

live_helpFeatured FAQ

How difficult is it to apply these wallpapers on your own?

Be prepared to put in some serious time and effort – it's a challenge, but totally doable with the right tools and patience. Make sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully, and don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

What's the best way to prevent bubbles and wrinkles during application?

Use a high-quality smoothing tool to get rid of any air pockets, and make sure to apply the paper slowly and evenly. It's also a good idea to work in small sections, so you can catch any issues before they become major problems.

Can I use these wallpapers in high-traffic areas?

Absolutely – the non-woven backing and vinyl material make them super durable and resistant to wear and tear. Just be aware that the weight of the rolls can be a challenge in certain situations, so plan accordingly.

How long do the wallpapers take to dry?

It really depends on the environment and the specific product, but generally speaking, you're looking at around 24 hours for the adhesive to fully set. Make sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for specific drying times and recommendations.

Can I return or exchange the wallpapers if I'm not satisfied?

Check with the manufacturer directly for their return and exchange policies – they may vary depending on the specific product and your location. It's always a good idea to read the fine print before making a purchase, so you know what to expect.

What's the best way to clean these wallpapers?

Use a mild soap and water solution to clean the surface – avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that could damage the vinyl. It's also a good idea to test a small area first to make sure the cleaning solution doesn't affect the color or texture.

Can I use these wallpapers in a bathroom or kitchen?

Yes, but make sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for specific recommendations and guidelines. The non-woven backing and vinyl material make them resistant to moisture, but they're not completely waterproof – so be aware of that when deciding where to use them.

How long do the wallpapers last?

With proper care and maintenance, these wallpapers can last for years – the non-woven backing and vinyl material make them super durable and resistant to wear and tear. Just be aware that the adhesive may start to break down over time, so you may need to reapply it periodically to keep the paper in place.
