A Weird and Wonderful Sausage: My Aperol-Infused Adventure

summarizeEditor's Summary

I'm a total sucker for anything unusual, and this Aperol liqueur-flavored sausage definitely caught my eye. With its distinctive white mold and overpowering aroma, this sausage is not for the faint of heart. The taste is an acquired one, but it's definitely interesting. If you're feeling adventurous and want to try something new, this sausage might be worth a shot. However, if you're looking for something more traditional, you might want to pass on this one. I've gotta say, I was a bit hesitant to try it at first, but the unique flavor profile and interesting texture from the white mold made it worth it. Plus, it's a good value for money at 399 rubles for 110 grams. You can find it in stores like Perekrestok, and it's usually priced around that. Overall, it's a solid addition to your charcuterie board, but don't say I didn't warn you.

A Weird and Wonderful Sausage: My Aperol-Infused Adventure
I'm a sucker for anything unusual, whether it's edible or not, so when I spotted the Aperol liqueur-flavored sausage packaging on a supermarket shelf, I instantly threw it into my cart without even reading the description or taking a closer look. I'll be trying it at home. The main thing is to grab it before it's all gone!
I picked it up at Perekrestok, and the price was a reasonable 399 rubles for 110 grams.
Now, let me tell you in detail about how it looks, what's in the mix, how it smells, how it tastes, and who might enjoy it and who might be better off not trying it.
First Impressions
At first glance, the white mold was visible, but I had no idea what it was. When I unwrapped it, it became clear – it's a type of noble mold, similar to the kind found on cheeses like brie or camembert. I'm not sure why it's on the sausage, but it's definitely interesting. The smell is also quite distinct and overpowering, much more so than the rind on those cheeses. I'd describe it as the aroma of socks left in a damp basement.
The casing doesn't affect the taste of the sausage at all and is easy to remove. I'm not sure if the manufacturer intended for it to be eaten, but I felt a dense base, similar to plastic wrap. I'm not sure if that's what it is, though.
Cross-Section
A thick layer of white mold, underneath which lies the sausage meat with chunks of fat. This doesn't look like your average sausage, where the 'fat' is in little circles that can be squeezed out. Here, the fat seems to have spread evenly across the surface:
The texture of this sausage is dense and springy, but not rubbery. I'd say it's neither too hard nor too soft. It cuts easily, but I couldn't manage to slice it thinly and semi-transparently. The mouthfeel is pleasant, with no hard bits.
Now, let's talk about the taste – it's a real experiment.
The thing that threw me off is the incredibly strong and unusual oiliness that coats your mouth the moment you take a bite. I'm not used to that, and it makes the sausage feel too greasy. And that oiliness just doesn't go away until the end. If I'm being honest, that's a major drawback for me.
But in other ways, the flavor development is amazing:
At first, you get the taste of regular sausage, and there's nothing out of the ordinary. But about 10 seconds later, you start to pick up on the Aperol notes, which are reminiscent of orange. Then, that citrusy note gives way to a bitter, herbaceous flavor, and the finish is a subtle bitterness that reminds me of juniper.
The Aperol doesn't overpower the sausage at all – it's actually a really nice fit. The combination is interesting and harmonious. If only they could tone down that oiliness, it'd be perfect.
Ingredients
I'll just repeat what's already been said:
Composition: Pork, pork fat, dry skimmed milk, sea salt, nitrite-curing mixture (sea salt, colour fixative - sodium nitrite, preservative - potassium nitrate), dextrose, flavourings (salami flavour, liqueur flavour, orange extract), Aperol liqueur, plant extracts (grape pips, pomegranate, pineapple, green tea, blueberry), starter cultures. Contains milk, may contain traces of nuts and nut products.I have to say, the composition is pretty intriguing – I won't go into details, but if you're interested, feel free to dig deeper. What caught my attention is the presence of Aperol in the ingredients. I was also surprised to find extracts of various berries; it's clear the manufacturer went the extra mile to make this product truly unique.
Verdict
This Aperol-infused sausage is an interesting twist, but it's also quite finicky.
It's not suitable for sandwiches – that's not what it's designed for. Don't slice it too thickly either; the flavor can get overwhelming in a bad way. I ended up slicing it thinly, pairing it with brie cheese to create a nice contrast of flavors.
This is not a daily option, but rather a special occasion treat that you can try once a year. I don't feel like repeating the experience right now, but I think I'll be craving it again in a year's time.
I'd recommend it to fans of unusual flavors, Aperol enthusiasts, and those who are tired of the usual sausage taste. Conservatives and those who dislike citrus or liqueur notes might want to steer clear.
Thanks for reading!
