What's it all about: a story about two young lovers who leave Kentucky in a car to test the waters of adulthood, and it's a wild ride. This is a crime drama, road movie with a 18+ rating.The twist: the main character is obsessed with videography and barely puts the camera down, capturing everything as it happens. He was kicked out of college for filming someone's suicide, and he's also really into Judy.
This reminded me of Crime and Punishment - the American version, that is. There's also a college student who's an introvert, fixated on one thing - in this case, Judy.
Expect road trips, gunplay, reality-bending special effects, drunken binges, and a wild festival in a small community (although the actors look older than the characters in Crime and Punishment). Is there a moral? Absolutely. But don't expect any preachiness throughout the film.
Who'll love it: fans of subculture themes or road trip adventures, Edward Burns enthusiasts, music aficionados, and indie film buffs.
Who won't: those who can't handle profanity or themes that go against the grain; conformists; and anyone who likes to snack while watching (in some scenes). This is not a family-friendly film. The cultural level is pretty low.
I caught Jimmy and Judy on the platform in 2005, and it was a meeting of young 'stars' from cult classics (The Terminator and American History X, and Scream and Buffy the Vampire Slayer). In my opinion, they even resemble each other in terms of their facial expressions.
Shooting the film was a pivotal moment - it's what brought the couple together, leading to marriage and a child. The gossip columns will have a field day recounting the story. Apparently, the actors have managed to put their differences aside, but Edward Furlong has had a history of getting restraining orders against certain women.
Despite the rough start, both actors deliver impressive performances, bringing a youthful energy and enthusiasm to their roles.
Of course, it's not all sunshine and rainbows - watching the couple's downward spiral can be tough to stomach, but that's also where the lesson lies - in both the film and real life. I think we're taught not to be led astray. Take Bella and her on-screen counterpart, for example - it's clear how much depends on who you're with (and whether you're following someone at all). Would Judy have ended up in that situation if she were on her own? Probably not. Maybe Bella's acting career wouldn't have fizzled out in 2017 if she'd chosen a different partner.
The film clocks in at 99 minutes and was shot on a handheld camera, giving it a raw, homemade feel. The footage is sometimes intentionally grainy, and the camera work is often shaky. It's like watching a VHS tape.

But since the main character is still in college, you could say they love each other - within their limited emotional capabilities.At the end of the day, it doesn't matter where the characters end up (with punks, hippies, or cults). The scenes of group sex in the film are not isolated incidents. They were pretty common in the US during the Sharon Tate era, and I'm sure they still exist today. Did this film remind me of 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood'? More like the other way around - the second film was released later.
I recommend watching it till the end, as the soundtrack 'Violence In the Snowy Fields' by Dolorean creates a great atmosphere.
And for those interested in the dangers of cults, there's a pretty good Russian mini-series.
