A Magical Ride with Baba Yaga: A Review of Yaga on Our Head

summarizeEditor's Summary

I just watched Yaga on Our Head with my son's class on the last day of school and I'm still grinning from ear to ear. We'd just finished a five-week study block, and I was worried the movie wouldn't live up to the usual excitement. But boy, was I wrong! This fantasy comedy is a total game-changer, especially for families. Svetlana Khodchenkova shines as the titular Baba Yaga, and the movie's themes of acceptance and self-discovery really resonated with the kids. The visuals are stunning, with vibrant colors and impressive special effects that will transport you to a magical world. The story is engaging and easy to follow, making it perfect for a family movie night. The themes of acceptance and self-discovery are timely and thought-provoking, and the movie's humor is clever and will keep you laughing throughout. The soundtrack is catchy and adds to the overall magic of the film.

Hello!
We took my son's class to the movies on the last day of school before the holidays. Our system is a 5/1 schedule, where we study for five weeks and then take a one-week break - it doesn't quite match the usual rhythm.
We chose 'Yaga on Our Head.' I'm being honest, after 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'Gorynych,' I wasn't expecting much. I hadn't seen any ads, and my expectations were basically zero, except for knowing who Svetlana Khodchenkova was.
Today, I want to tell you about 'Yaga on Our Head (2025, movie)'
Yaga on Our Head movie

☆ MOVIE SYNOPSIS
When 10-year-old Petya gets a new nanny - a strange and grumpy, but incredibly charming one - he quickly realizes she's not like the others. She's a 'nanny in disguise,' and in reality, she's Baba Yaga, the legendary witch who's lost her broom and hidden herself among people. Now, only Petya can help her regain her magical powers, and Baba Yaga can teach the boy to fly - not just on a broom, but through life.
Baba Yaga on Our Head Movie
MAIN CHARACTERS
Petya (played by Alexander Samusev) is a 4th-grade student who wishes his parents could spend more time with him. The kid does a great job in his role, kudos!
Our kids pretty much recited the Lit Reading textbook scene, and it was hilarious - the teacher even gave them high marks.
Baba Yaga on Our Head Movie
Baba Yaga (played by Svetlana Khodchenkova) is a lovely witch, cunning but ultimately kind. I loved how they portrayed her behavior in the movie - it's different from other films, and I think Svetlana did a great job.
Baba Yaga on Our Head Movie (2025) Review
In the movie 'Baba Yaga on Our Head,' the level of danger, magical pranks, and visuals is significantly different, but I'll say this: all our kids absolutely loved it.
Baba Yaga on Our Head Movie
I've got to say, the experience of watching this movie is something you need to see for yourself, but I'm sure someone will write a negative review about it eventually. It's just a matter of time.
A scene from the movie Yaga on Our Head
Mama Petia (played by Veronika Timofeyeva) is a psychologist who helps parents deal with their kids' behavior. She's got a busy schedule, but her son would love to get her attention.
Yaga on Our Head (2025) movieI only remember the actress from the movie Rodkom.
Yaga on Our Head movie review
Papa Petia (played by Denis Pritkov) works a lot, but deep down, he knows his son needs him. He's not the type to pass all the responsibility to his wife; he's actively involved in family life.
I remember the actor from the movie where he played the Chef; he does a great job. Although, there are moments where he misses the mark, but that's okay, it's a kids' movie.
Yaga on Our Heads movie (2025) review
King Kostya the Immortal, who's also known as Konstantin Bessmertny. I just can't imagine anyone else playing this role. Watching him act is a treat.
Yaga on Our Head movie
No woodenness or pretentiousness, I'm genuinely impressed. And I loved its design, like a modern stylish costume with a golden skeleton, if you take a closer look.
Yaga on Our Heads movie
The other characters are secondary. In fact, they look so unremarkable that I wouldn't have been able to guess who they were if it wasn't for the actions they took.
Yaga on Our Heads (2025) movie
I liked that the focus was on the main idea and they didn't try to 'pull the wool over our eyes.'
Yaga on Our Heads movie
And Lagashkin even made a cameo as the director.

☆ PLOT
Petya really wants to go to the theater, which has been open for over a year, but he's never been with his parents. Both parents are busy with work. His mom, who tells people how to be closer to their kids, even runs mass workshops (I'd call her a life coach, not a psychologist)
Petya is convinced he doesn't need babysitters and can handle things on his own.
And then magic happens, changing everything in his life.
Yaga on Our Heads movie
Fear dominates over curiosity, but
Where one door closes, another opens
A movie that really got under our skin
I have to say, the movie is really interesting. The struggle between good and evil is on par with a modern fairy tale.
The theme that resonates with many families where parents are away working all the time is a great point.
It's a reminder that kids need their parents, not just toys. And let's be honest, it's getting harder to surprise them with anything that's not magic.
A movie that really got under our skin
The theme of burnout is also well-explored. We all know how working overtime and lack of sleep can affect our attention, and the taxi driver's storyline really drives this point home.
A movie that really got under our skin
And yet, people surrounded by lights are still stuck in the dark.
A movie that really got under our skin
Oh, and I almost forgot to mention the RABBITS! I'm absolutely thrilled. My mind is racing with memories of creepy dolls and a familiar voice... I'm not sure where it's from.
☆ Impressions of the movie☆
Interesting storyline that's not overcomplicated - that's a plusNice costumes - I'd even say they're beautiful, with no tattered bitsGreat special effectsNot too long for the runtime
