My Spackling Adventure: How Vetonit LR+ Saved My Sanity and Walls
I'm not exactly thrilled about spackling walls, but life had other plans. My husband and I decided to give our bathroom a makeover. We ripped off the old wallpaper, and underneath, we found uneven walls with holes and bumps. The old wallpaper had somehow smoothed out the surface. We realized that just applying new wallpaper wouldn't be enough - we needed to level the walls.
Before we started, I had no experience with spackling walls, but I dove headfirst into the project. I researched and found out that Vetonit LR+ is a high-quality and affordable spackling compound. It comes in various sizes, and I bought the smallest pack - 5 kg.
As I started working with Vetonit LR+, I was impressed with how easy it was to mix and apply. The instructions for preparing the spackling compound mixture are clearly outlined on the packaging. I mixed the powder with water, and initially, I mixed a small amount to get a feel for the ideal consistency for spreading and even application.
According to the manufacturer, 5kg of dry powder requires 1.6-1.8 liters of water. From this calculation, I worked out that 2.5kg needs 0.8 liters of water, and 250g of Vetonit spackling compound requires 80ml of water. I mixed it using a makeshift tool or a putty knife. The instructions suggest using a drill, but that's probably for large quantities to avoid lumps.
Mixing it with a putty knife was a breeze, and I didn't even get any lumps. The dry powder can get a bit dusty if you're not careful - try not to shake it up or pour it from a height, and you'll be fine. At first, I wasn't sure what consistency was best for easy work, but after a few mixes, I figured out that I prefer a thinner mix - it gives me a smoother surface and better coverage.
Before applying the spackling compound, it's essential to get the surface ready. Clean the walls of any dust or dirt (I used a damp cloth for this), and apply a primer to the walls (you can skip this step, but I decided to go for it since the walls were originally painted by the builder, making the surface quite smooth).
Now, let's take a closer look at the individual parts of the wall that I've spackled with Vetonit. I was able to smooth out the corners without too much hassle. I started from the corner and worked my way outwards. It's way easier than trying to even out a straight wall with a deep hole.
Big holes are tough to smooth out, so I had to spend a bit more time on those. I applied it in multiple layers - one coat, waited for it to dry, and then applied another, and in some cases, a third. But hey, I'm no pro, maybe someone else can do it in one go.
After applying the spackling compound, I used a specialized sanding tool to smooth out the edges. It's just a matter of sanding it down to a smooth finish with the rest of the wall. Sanding is a breeze, just be careful not to overdo it and sand too much off.
The spackling compound dries really quickly and doesn't crumble after it's dry. I have to say, Vetonit LR+ Spackling Compound was a pleasure to work with. As a complete beginner when it comes to wall spackling, I managed to smooth out some pretty rough patches - holes, cracks, and all. It's not perfect, but it's a huge improvement from where I started.
I'm really impressed with how well the joint compound adheres to the surface - it doesn't chip off easily. After it dries and I apply a primer, the wallpaper sticks to it like a charm. The joint compound is a breeze to work with - it sets up quickly and is easy to spread and smooth out.
I think the price is pretty reasonable. For a small space like a bathroom with walls in pretty rough shape, I ended up needing 10 kg of the compound to get the job done, even though the 5 kg package said it would be enough.
Technical specs for Vetonit joint compound, for pros:
Safe for health and the environment.Economic consumption of the mixture.Super-plasticity, ideal layer bonding.Easy and high-quality sanding.Fast drying - one layer (1-5 mm) dries completely within 24 hours.
Why I Needed Spackling Compound?
I was planning to put up wallpaper in the bathroom. And to make the wallpaper look nice, I needed smooth walls. That's where spackling compound comes in – it's essentially a type of joint compound that helps to fill in small cracks and imperfections on the wall surface. I picked it up from the hardware store near my place.
Appearance
It comes in a 5kg plastic pack. The powder inside looks like laundry detergent, but with a finer texture. The smell's not bad, quite tolerable.
Application
Before applying the spackling compound, it's essential to get the surface ready. Clean the walls of any dust or dirt (I used a damp cloth for this), and apply a primer to the walls (you can skip this step, but I decided to go for it since the walls were originally painted by the builder, making the surface quite smooth).
Now, let's prepare the mixture for wall smoothing.
