A Major Letdown: What I Expected vs. What I Got

summarizeEditor's Summary

I'm still reeling from the disappointment of watching the Three Cats movie. The experience was a far cry from what I had expected, and it left me feeling frustrated and ripped off. The movie's lackluster plot and unimpressive visuals made it a total letdown. I'd been looking forward to another exciting adventure with the Three Cats, but this one failed to deliver. The outrageous ticket price – 460 rubles for an adult and 230 rubles for a kid – was daylight robbery, especially when you compare it to other cinemas like Karo, where tickets cost 1100 rubles for an adult and 660 rubles for a kid. That's just crazy. The movie's failure to impress was a major letdown, especially considering the hype surrounding it. I thought the trailer and description looked interesting, but the actual movie was a letdown. The Three Cats franchise has a loyal fan base, which is a testament to its enduring popularity, but this movie didn't live up to expectations. The setting and premise were intriguing, but the execution fell short. The animation was passable, but it didn't blow me away. The runtime was a decent length, neither too long nor too short, but that's about it. The franchise has a rich history, which adds to its charm, but this movie didn't do it justice.

A Major Letdown: What I Expected vs. What I Got
I'm still reeling from the disappointment of watching the Three Cats movie. The experience was a far cry from what I had expected, and it left me feeling frustrated and ripped off.
Last year, my family and I went to the cinema on December 31st to watch the Three Cats: Winter Holidays movie. We were looking forward to another exciting adventure with the Three Cats, and we were excited to see what the new movie had in store for us. This year, we were thinking of going again, but we were torn between the Three Bogatyrs: A Cut with a Knife movie and the Three Cats: A Journey Through Time movie. The trailer for the bogatyrs didn't really impress us, but the trailer and description for the Three Cats movie looked interesting. We ended up going to a different cinema, but the only showing for this movie was at 10 am.
The tickets were 460 rubles for an adult and 230 rubles for a kid. Meanwhile, at the Karo cinemas, which we had originally planned to go to, the ticket for an adult was 1100 rubles, and for a kid, it was 660 rubles. That's just outrageous! The movie was a huge letdown, and we left feeling like we'd been ripped off.
So, when I was reading the description of the movie and watching the trailer, I saw this:
In the Three Cats family, December 31st is a very special day – it's the 10-year anniversary of when mom and dad first met. Everyone's excited for the celebration, but first, they need to pick up a special gift from grandma Izolda at the science center. While they're there, they stumble upon an old couch that turns out to be a time machine, and their adventure through time begins. The cats and their parents travel back to the Stone Age, ancient times, the Middle Ages, the Industrial Age, and even witness the moment when mom and dad first met, exactly 10 years ago.
Each generation of kittens faces its own set of challenges, dangers, and hilarious adventures – from chariot racing to rescuing mom from a medieval king's castle. But to make it back home and celebrate their birthday, the kittens and their parents have to not only navigate through time, but also play a key role in their own love story.
I was convinced that we'd get a full-length animated movie with a well-developed, engaging storyline. That's what happened last year (Three Cats and Winter Holidays) and in 2022 (Three Cats and a Sea of Adventures). But we were left stunned when we saw... short, disconnected episodes. Just like the ones you'd watch on TV. The stories aren't linked together. They tied everything to the theme of time and its fleeting nature, but there's no narrative connection between them.
Take the main storyline, for example. It's about the Three Cats family's 10-year anniversary celebration, but it's broken up into five separate episodes. The first one's about preparing for the celebration, the second one's about visiting the science center, and so on.
The first episode is about the Three Cats family preparing for their 10-year anniversary celebration. The second episode is about the Three Cats family visiting the science center and discovering the time machine. The third episode is about the Three Cats family traveling back in time to the Stone Age.The fourth episode is about the Three Cats family traveling back in time to ancient times. The fifth episode is about the Three Cats family traveling back in time to the Middle Ages and rescuing mom from a medieval king's castle. The fifth short film is that very time-traveling adventure, which is mentioned in the description and trailer, and depicted on the movie poster. Each episode is about 15 minutes long. And even this time-traveling adventure is short, disjointed, and not well-developed. I also want to mention the terrible sound quality. Before showing the movie, they played a trailer for Pinocchio. The sound was amazing – immersive and all-encompassing. But in the Three Cats movie, it was just regular stereo sound, limited in depth and direction. It felt like watching TV, honestly.
I've got to say, I was expecting something way more epic for the 10-year anniversary of the project, especially since it's also a milestone for the parents of the three cats. I mean, why not go all out and make a full-length film? Instead, we got a bunch of disconnected shorts. And to make matters worse, we didn't even get a heads up about it - we found out when we were already sitting in the theater!
I'm taking off a whole star for this one. I'm still trying to process the sheer disappointment. I mean, a thousand bucks for a single ticket? That's just outrageous.
