I'm a big fan of non-fiction books, but lately, I've developed a passion for following the latest research in neuroscience and biology. So, when I came across Sean Stevenson's book 'Healthy Sleep: 21 Steps to Feeling Good', I was really excited to dive in. Even in my small e-library on LitRes, I moved this book to a special folder called 'Must-reads'.
Sean Stevenson's book 'Healthy Sleep: 21 Steps to Feeling Good' is all about simple tips that we've forgotten in our always-on, media-saturated lives.
About the book:
Sleep is a crucial component of a healthy lifestyle, but many of us think we can sacrifice it in favor of more interesting and useful activities. This approach is extremely dangerous: sleep deprivation leads to a significant decrease in quality of life, without giving us the benefits of exercise and a balanced diet. Sean Stevenson has experienced the serious consequences of sleep deprivation firsthand. From his book, you'll learn whether it's possible to catch up on sleep on weekends if you're consistently sleep-deprived during the week; what time of day is best for exercise to improve sleep; how to set up your bedroom for sleep; whether it's okay to use gadgets in the evening, and much more.
The only downside of this book is that it focuses exclusively on people who sleep from 10 PM to 6 AM. To me, that's a pretty narrow category of people in our modern world.
The first tip from this book that I've started applying to my own life is swapping out e-books for physical books and having conversations with my loved one before bed (assuming they're not too busy to give me 15 minutes of quiet time to fall asleep). Although, in reality, this habit has been ingrained in me for a while.
I've been doing this since I was a kid – I couldn't fall asleep unless my mom read to me for at least 15 minutes. I exploited my parents until I was in school, and as an adult, my partner takes on that role.As for the tip on ventilating my bedroom, I don't do it as often as I should, but I do try. I usually ventilate my bedroom before bed, but I like to sleep in a warm environment, so I close all the windows.
I have to say, even after following the first tip, my sleep quality improved, and I stopped hitting the snooze button over and over. Plus, I'm not as groggy in the morning as I used to be, although after a tough workout, I still need some time to recover before heading to work. Now, I'm not trying to nitpick the author, because everyone has their own opinions, and I found some unproven or incorrect statements in this book. For instance, the claim about the amount of coffee is something I don't agree with, as the author doesn't provide any scientific research to back it up. It's just a 'fact' that's not supported by evidence.
Of course, there are some terms in the book that might be unfamiliar to non-experts, like me. I've heard those terms before, but I'm not exactly a brain expert or biologist, so it's like reading a foreign language. However, the more I read and hear about it, the more it starts to make sense.
One section of the book really caught my attention and reinforced my beliefs about the importance of exercise, healthy eating, and good sleep.
I've got to say, when it comes to meal planning, this book is just as underwhelming as "The Body Book" by Cameron Diaz. While the book does have some decent ideas, it's not like it's going to revolutionize your life or anything. Getting your diet in order can have a huge impact on your life, but it's not like it's rocket science. When it comes to exercise, the book does a decent job of explaining the science behind it. Even I, someone who's not exactly a fan of weightlifting, found myself doing at least two strength training sessions a week. I think even people who are trying to lose weight would be better off reading this book than subjecting themselves to fad diets and damaging their health. I'd say this book, "Healthy Sleep", is actually pretty useful, but only for people who are willing to think critically. I mean, the author even includes a disclaimer that I think is really responsible of them.
Sure, I don't agree with everything in the book, but overall, it's way more useful than most of the fluff out there about diets and self-improvement without any actual science backing it up.
