This book, 'The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle', really threw me for a loop.
I must admit, I was completely lost until about halfway through the book. The first few chapters are a total mess – names, events, bodies, time loops, and weird rules that aren't explained directly. The author drops you into the story without warning.
However, as I continued reading, I began to appreciate the complexity and depth of the narrative. The story revolves around the mysterious death of Evelyn Hardcastle, who dies every day in the same mansion, Blackheath House. The main character, whose name we're kept in the dark about for a while, is stuck reliving the same day eight times, each time in a different body.
Each new body isn't just a shell, it's a fully-fledged person with their own habits, weaknesses, fears, and physical limitations. One of the characters is a cripple, another struggles with addiction, and the third has power and influence... These traits directly impact the investigation and every day, we get a little more insight into what's going on.
The atmosphere in this book is seriously unsettling. Blackheath is like a gothic space, full of secrets, half-truths, and this constant sense of danger lurking around every corner. It's like every character is hiding something, and anyone could be a killer...
The main character, Aiden, is a really interesting figure. He's not your typical detective with a sharp mind and iron logic; he's more of a confused person slowly piecing himself back together. As the story unfolds, we learn that he's not as perfect as he seems at first... Yeah, I was pretty surprised by who he turned out to be by the end of the book.
Evelyn Hardcastle - the character who remains somewhat of an enigma for a long time, more of a symbol than a living person. She's the center of the story, but not really an active participant. It all changes closer to the end - her character becomes more fleshed out, and the reader realizes that her death is just the tip of the iceberg of a much more complex and dark story. Trust me, there's a whole lot of backstory...
Anna is Aiden's sidekick, but she's like everyone else except the main character - she wakes up every day with a blank slate. She wants to break free from these endless, identical days, so she tries to help in any way she can.
And then there's the main antagonist, Kolridg, who also only has one day, just like Anna. He's going all out, taking a no-holds-barred approach. Of course, only one person can escape Blackheath...
This book has a ton of characters, and at first, it's easy to get lost in the story. But by the end, everything starts to make sense.
The author, Stuart Turton, is a British writer, and the book was first published in 2018. It's since become super popular, winning awards and getting a reputation as one of the most unique detective novels of the 21st century.
I have to give the author credit for taking a risk with the non-traditional structure and keeping the tension going until the very last page. I'm going to remember this book for a long time.

Yeah, it's a weird book! Yeah, it's pretty twisty! Sometimes it feels like the author is overcomplicating things, adding new rules and restrictions left and right. But somehow, by the end, all the plot threads come together, and the chaos of the early chapters coalesces into something coherent.
For me, this book is like a mashup of Agatha Christie and the movie 'The Bourne Identity'.
