Can Stephen King's Favorite Medical Drama Top 'House M.D.' and 'Grey's Anatomy'?
I'm a huge fan of medical dramas, and I've spent countless hours binge-watching some of the best ones out there, including 'House M.D.' and 'Grey's Anatomy', which I've even re-watched multiple times from start to finish. 'Grey's Anatomy' is my all-time favorite show, and I love it unconditionally, so I was naturally drawn to Stephen King's bold statement about a new medical drama being the best in cinematic history.
As a huge fan of Stephen King too, I was twice as intrigued to find out what this new show could be that King would rate so highly. As it turned out, he was talking about the show 'The Pitt'. I recently stumbled upon a Google alert about King's praise for this show, and I'm a sucker for a good medical drama, so I had to check it out.
It turns out the show is actually pretty fresh, having premiered on January 9, 2025, and by the time I wrote this review, 9 episodes had already been released.
I was so hooked from the first episode that I ended up watching all 9 in one day.
The daily grind of the emergency department staff at Pittsburg Hospital.
Incidentally, according to some data from KinoPoisk, the show was initially conceived as a sequel to the well-known 'ER', with the main character of 'The Pitt' being a character from that show. However, due to some circumstances, they had to abandon the idea of a sequel.
Initially, director John Wells and actor Noah Wyle wanted to make a sequel to their own highly successful project, 'ER' (1994-2009). Wyle would reprise his role as Dr. John Carter. Unfortunately, they were unable to obtain permission from the rights holders (the heirs of writer and creator Michael Crichton) to film an actual sequel, so they had to modify the concept of the project.
I find it inexplicable, but the show 'ER', which is undoubtedly one of the most popular medical dramas, gives me a strong sense of unease, and no matter how many times I try to start watching it, I somehow get a mental block and turn it off. So, I haven't watched 'ER', and none of the actors from that show are familiar to me. Therefore, in 'The Pitt', I saw all the main characters for the first time.
I've gotta say, the series 'Pitt' is shot pretty unorthodoxly. With 15 episodes planned for release, each one is a one-hour shift for Dr. Rabinovich's emergency department. I've watched a ton of medical dramas, and I've gotta say, I've never seen a format like this before. Essentially, the entire first season is one working day for the emergency doctor, and that's pretty unique. I'd say the amount of stuff that happens is a bit over the top, but it's still really engaging to watch.
From the get-go, the hospital setting gives us a sense that each character has some personal drama going on, and while they try to keep that in the background and focus on their duty, it's not always easy. Because doctors are people too, I think. The series takes place in the post-COVID period, which is clear from the first few scenes, and that's something that's definitely relevant to modern times. So, you can expect COVID to be a recurring theme, and the experience of living through a pandemic is woven throughout the story.
From the very first episode, you're immersed in the chaos of the emergency department, where patients can come in with anything from a cut to a overdose or something even worse. So, you've got doctors from different specialties, like therapists who think they're above the law, cold-blooded surgeons, and all sorts of other characters. And then there are the students, who are a delight to watch. Each one has their own unique personality – some are confident and capable, while others are nervous wrecks who seem to be constantly spilling bodily fluids all over the place. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
One thing that's definitely not for the faint of heart is the medical aspect of the show – there's a lot of gore, blood, and broken bones, so if you're squeamish, you might want to look elsewhere. But personally, I find that kind of realism really adds to the authenticity of the show. It's definitely not for everyone, but for me, it's a major plus.
I really liked the way the creators of this show attempted to portray an imperfect American hospital. They did a great job of showing the problems with bureaucracy and administrative issues from the management side, but what really stood out to me was the lack of space in the hospital, the shortage of staff, hints at inadequate funding, and low pay for employees.
'House' doesn't really show me that kind of thing, but it's not really a government hospital, I think. I haven't watched it in ages, maybe it's worth re-watching. 'Anatomy of Grey' did have some moments where they showed the imperfections of the system and some episodes about funding issues, but they didn't really focus on it.
This kind of portrayal of a government hospital really stood out to me in the British series 'It Will Be Painful', where they clearly outlined the main problems with state healthcare. And honestly, watching shows like that makes me feel a little bit better, because our people love to shout that only in our country can this kind of thing happen. But it's not true. Any kind of 'this kind of thing' can happen anywhere.
So, in 'Pitt Hospital', there are massive queues of patients, a shortage of staff, overtime, a crisis in medical psychology that nobody really cares about, a lot of PTSD, which nobody pays attention to either.
The show is so tolerant it's suffocating – you can't miss it: there's an African American woman as the head of the entire hospital, nurses in hijabs, a therapist doctor with a bracelet on her ankle, immigrant staff, a couple of LGBTQ+ patients, a trans person, and everyone exists in harmony.
I wouldn't say this tolerance is annoying, but I did notice that they considered everyone, so nobody would complain.
I watched 9 episodes of the show, and in terms of the plot, it only corresponds to 3 hours of the day, but in that time, there were just incredible events and patients in Pitt Hospital. Honestly, I got really stressed out, there were a lot of triggers in the show that hit close to home for me. But I won't deny it, I'm always a total sap when it comes to medical dramas, so this one's no exception – I'm basically a total empath.
I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed the series: it's lively, engaging, captivating, fresh, and of high quality. However, I still can't agree with Mr. King that this series surpasses the previous legendary medical dramas, at least not yet, since I haven't made it through enough seasons to hold my attention and devotion. More realistic and relatable? Perhaps, yes.
Yes, the series has a high rating and looks promising: it's already been renewed for a second season, but we'll have to wait and see what that brings. I doubt each season will follow a single workday, and instead, we'll see more in-depth explorations of the main characters and upcoming events. Time will tell. From my perspective, I highly recommend this series to fans of the genre, and I'm excited to continue watching.
