Hello everyone!
I recently read 'The Girl in the Fog', and I'm still trying to process what I just experienced.
My TakeawaysThe story takes place in a quaint mountain village called Avesa, set in our current times.
Everyone knows each other there, and Avesa appears to be a cozy, quiet, and peaceful place from the outside.
Just before Christmas, a 16-year-old local girl named Anna Lu goes missing.
Agent Vogel is sent to investigate her disappearance.Vogel is a well-known and effective agent, but he has some subjective and contentious methods.
Vogel has a suspect, and he's willing to do whatever it takes to catch him. However, the rest of the authorities aren't so sure about the suspect's guilt. There are some discrepancies and inconsistencies in the evidence and motives. So, is he guilty or not? Who's right?...
'The Girl in the Fog', like other books by Camilleri, left me with mixed feelings.
On one hand, the detective has an intriguing plot and character development.
The isolated mountain village; the devout family of the missing girl; Anna Lu, who doesn't use gadgets and loves cats; the wholesome life of the small community.
I found myself with more questions than answers - the more I read, the more versions and theories popped up.
The author tackles a sensitive topic, showing just how easily someone can become a victim of police or judicial abuse. It's a sobering reminder that the justice system isn't infallible. I found myself questioning whether all means are justified in catching a culprit, and whether it's ever okay to bend the rules. I didn't have a clear answer, but it was definitely something that stuck with me while I was reading.3. The book is a real page-turner.
On the other hand, there are some things about this book that didn't sit well with me.One of the main issues is that there isn't a single likable character in this book - they all have some kind of baggage.
Any closed community just screams secrets and unpleasant surprises - I was expecting something big, but it turned out to be pretty underwhelming.
The way the story is told is all over the place - it's not chronological at all.
It's really confusing, and the constant time jumps just grated on me - there's no flow to the story whatsoever.4. I appreciated the author's idea, but the ending left me feeling a bit unsatisfied. It's a bit of a mess, and there are some unanswered questions. I did manage to piece together the author's plan, though.
'The Girl in the Fog' is an interesting book, but it's left me with a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.
I'd definitely recommend checking out the rest of this author's work, but this book isn't without its flaws.
Here are my thoughts on some of their other books
