We used to have a super-smart labrador, but our basset hound, Naike, had other plans. He'd sleep with us on our bed from the very first night he was home - much to our dismay. Those big brown eyes can talk you into just about anything, though!

Basset hounds are foodies, and they'll sell you out for a snack. They'll do it with a straight face, too.

The constant struggle to find food for them is real. You'll need to work on this, and it's not easy.

And don't even get me started on leaving food out at home - it'll be gone in no time.

Big changes can be tough, especially if you've got a strong separation anxiety dog on your hands - like my Cocker Spaniel. Be prepared for some work, because you might just need it. We definitely did, and it paid off in the end.

If you're not planning on doing any major renovations, you probably will be once you bring a basset hound into your life. We had an old renovation, and our basset hound seemed determined to get it updated ASAP. And, of course, there are the chewables to worry about, so it's best to leave as many legal options as possible. But, as with any pup, it's all about training and discipline - like when my husband left his headphones on the bed, and they didn't make it through the day.

In terms of health, we got lucky with our basset hound, Nicky. Just remember that basset hounds are prone to obesity, so keep an eye on their food intake.

I wouldn't recommend basset hounds to anyone, to be honest.

Yeah, they're adorable. Those little brown eyes and floppy ears are priceless. But, honestly, I don't think I'm ready for that kind of commitment again, especially since we've just finished renovating our apartment.

We've got a cat and a dog now, no need for a second dog. Maybe someday I'll be ready to get another dog, but it'll definitely be a breed that's a bit easier to handle than a Great Dane.
