I'm a TV junkie, but I only watch entertainment channels. My favorite one's Friday. I love their diverse programs, like Heaven's Chef, Klava's Heart, and Big Girls. But, after 'The Eagle and the Jackal' ended, there weren't many travel shows left. I deliberately avoided the show with Ivel'eva and Kagramanov, though.
Friday took things a bit too far, but I'll get back to that, and started airing Stas Natanzon's 'Let's Go' series. I think they just bought the content from the author, judging by the lack of any signs on the channel's official website. Whatever the case.
The storytelling in these videos is similar to a blogger's vlog, which I'm not a fan of. But, unlike the mindless, self-absorbed YouTubers that make up 99.9% of bloggers, Stas is really likable. He's got a well-spoken tone, can distill essential facts from a sea of information, and communicates effectively in foreign languages. He comes across as an intelligent person, especially after Ivel'eva and Kagramanov.
What makes 'Let's Go' stand out?
The host embarks on a solo journey to various countries, focusing on the lesser-known aspects of these destinations.Stas explores these countries from the inside, almost like a local.He visits places that white tourists shouldn't go to, shows things that could get you hurt, and tries things that any sane tourist would never do.During the run of 'Let's Go' on Friday, viewers have seen numerous countries. There's Uzbekistan, which is relatively close, where they still speak some Russian. We learned about the country's traditions, visited Islamic educational institutions, and saw how they make the perfect pilaf.
Some of the most memorable episodes include:
Walking through some of India's toughest slums with the author.Checking out men's laundromats.Listening to some pretty harrowing stories from Russian expats and wealthy Moscow property owners looking for spiritual enlightenment on Goa.The show often features interviews with former criminals, and the author has done a particularly thorough job of questioning former yakuza members, who've shed some light on the secrets of this ancient crime syndicate.
We've also learned about the atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, the aftermath of the Fukushima disaster, and plenty more.
Stas's fearless approach to trying new foods has been entertaining to watch
His experiment with 'meat from the dump' in Cambodia, where locals wash off the grime, re-form it, cook it, and then eat it, has left me worried about the host's health.The channel's scheduling issues
Friday's gone a bit overboard as usual. They're forcing-feed the viewer with non-stop programming on Sundays, and partly on Friday evenings too. I've basically got the entire lineup memorized now, and new episodes aren't coming out that often.
To be honest, the channel's got some huge problems with scheduling content. I'll keep my thoughts concise in a quote.
It's anyone's guess why Piatyza can't hire a pro to plan out their programming. The result is 'overfeeding' the viewer with great shows to the point of nausea. 'Pogna' is a prime example (and all those marathons of 'Bitva Shefov', 'Na Nozhakh', 'Chetyre Svadby', and more).
Recently, it's become normal practice to interrupt popular shows mid-season. That's what happened with the last season of 'Patsany', when a Candela show just cut in mid-sentence, and people turned off their TVs without finishing the episode.
Or take 'Master-Konditir', which got moved from prime time to the middle of the night. Now, they're showing reruns of old episodes instead, which is a total waste of people's time when they're coming home from work and want to watch something new.
These weird scheduling changes are getting a lot of backlash on social media, with people begging the channel not to mess things up. But Piatyza's not listening. If they keep this up, they're going to lose popularity fast.
I'll wrap up my review of 'Pogna' with a positive recommendation to all travel show fans. I'm giving it 5 stars and saying it's definitely worth watching.
