My Family's Silvering Conundrum: A Mom's Honest Experience

summarizeEditor's Summary

As a mom of a toddler with a strong gag reflex and sensitivity to dental procedures, I was hesitant to try silvering for my son's molars. But after researching and consulting with our dentist, we decided it was the best option for our family. The process was surprisingly straightforward - we just had to schedule an appointment and show up. My son's silvering procedure was a breeze, and the results were impressive. The procedure was pain-free, which was a huge relief for both of us. I was worried about the cost, but it was actually quite affordable. The dentist suggested either silvering or regular fillings, but my son couldn't sit still for more than a minute. Another option was to do the procedure under general anesthesia, but that would've cost over 10,000 rubles, which was way out of our budget. So, the only option left was silvering. I was shocked when they put my son in a special chair, asked him to open his mouth, and quickly swabbed his upper molars with a solution. I was expecting some prep work, but it seemed like they just got started. The whole procedure took less than 10 minutes, and my son didn't flinch once. The dentist said it was a great option for kids with sensitive teeth or gag reflexes. After the procedure, we were able to eat and drink normally, and my son's teeth looked great. The silvering helped to prevent further decay and made his teeth look healthier. We were thrilled with the results and would recommend it to other parents in similar situations.

Three years ago, my oldest son was 2.5 years old, and a white coating appeared on his upper molars. I wasn't a clueless mom who let her kid eat candy all day and neglected oral hygiene. My son had a strong gag reflex, and from 9 months old, he started getting car sick, which never went away. He'd also vomit from eating mashed potatoes, yogurt, and pâté. And let's not forget the toothbrush – all my attempts to clean his teeth from 6 months old ended in either vomiting or a tantrum.
The dentist suggested either silvering or regular fillings. But my son couldn't sit still for more than a minute, and no amount of persuasion helped. I had no idea how he'd react to a drill. Another option was to do the procedure under general anesthesia to avoid traumatizing his sensitive psyche. The clinic didn't offer that, and it would've cost over 10,000 rubles, which was way out of our budget as homeowners.
So, the only option left was silvering. I was shocked when they put my son in a special chair, asked him to open his mouth, and quickly swabbed his upper molars with a solution.
I was expecting some prep work, but it seemed like they just used the solution as is. I asked the dentist why they didn't prep the teeth first, and he said the silver ions would penetrate the teeth anyway.
Fast forward half a year, and I didn't want to take my son to that dentist again. But the private clinic was expensive too, with each tooth costing 500 rubles. In the end, we went to a different dentist in the clinic, and again, no one cleaned the teeth before the procedure.
We were advised to repeat the procedure every six months, which was frustrating. We ended up buying our own silvering solution, but nobody dared to apply it at home. I mean, you'd think a dentist's office would have the right tools to do it safely.
Now that our little one is five, he's getting more into brushing his teeth. We got an electric toothbrush, but we alternate between that and a regular one. And at five years old, he's already got five fillings on his molars – some of them are even colorful, like blue and green. To be honest, I'm not a fan of that approach, so I took my grandma and grandson to see the dentist about it.
Our pediatric dentist told us that we don't need to silver his teeth anymore because the cavities aren't spreading, and his teeth will last until they're replaced by permanent ones.
At first, after the first silvering, I was a bit traumatized by the sight of those black teeth. But the good news is that the solution wears off from healthy enamel within a day or two, leaving only the stained areas where there's cavities. It took me a month to get used to it.
My son, on the other hand, is a total trooper. He's always running around with sticks, pretending to be a drabash (that's a crossbow or Kalashnikov, for those who don't speak Russian). He doesn't care about his teeth, but he's starting to get the hang of taking care of them, or else he'll have to go through the drill (and the shot) all over again.
My verdict: if the cavities aren't too advanced, and you can't afford to get fillings done under anesthesia, then silvering is a good option – it gives you a chance to save your teeth until they're replaced by permanent ones.
Wishing all healthy kids!

My kid's been getting sick a lot lately? Our pediatrician and immunologist recommended Reaferon-Lipint and Bronhomunal. My thoughts after a year.
Anti-nausea wristbands
If your kid loves cuddling with puppies, kittens, or hamsters, don't forget about anti-parasite meds!
Ringworm - nobody's immune! Even a trip to the barber can be a risk!

I wanted to post a review for Argenat, but the moderators didn't let me. I'll add it here:
My dentist recommended buying single-component Argenat and doing the silvering procedure at home myself.
But finding and getting this product is a whole different story! How many medical techs we had to call and visit before we finally found 5ml of precious liquid.
The price is 300 rubles.
Dental silvering solutionThey offered us special sticks in the salon to apply the product, but they cost around 1000 rubles. That's because there are dozens of them in the package, and they don't sell them individually. But that's way too expensive! We decided to use cotton swabs instead.
Argenat for silvering at homeI read the instructions, but the recommendations were different from what the doctor prescribed in terms of frequency. Once you open the bottle, you can only store it for a year, after that a dentist told us that even if you store it longer, nothing bad will happen.
Armed with theoretical knowledge, we tried to put it into practice, but it was a disaster. Our three-year-old son was spinning around, and we were too scared to do anything wrong.
We took the product, our son, and headed to the dentist's office.
In short, do the silvering at the dentist's office because the kid will calm down from fear, open their mouth, and let you do the job right!
I'm adding to the review. At 7.5 years old, we had our son's two front upper teeth removed. Photo taken a couple of days before the removal:
As you can see, the teeth don't look too bad. The main thing is that we made it to the physiological replacement with permanent teeth!
Review of Ftor-lak for teeth
I recommend reading our second experience with silvering teeth. The youngest son didn't benefit from it. We did it too late. Read here.
This is the older son's teeth:
And this is after silvering - it only got worse:
My kid's dentist appointment is coming up soon, and I'm dreading the anesthesia. So, if you notice any white spots, get to the dentist ASAP and get them silvered ASAP! It works like a charm at the early stages, 100%!
