A Disappointing Experience with Saltone's Waterproof Spray
I've been using waterproof sprays for years to protect my shoes from the elements, and I've always been impressed with their performance. These treatments increase the lifespan of my shoes and keep them looking great for longer.
However, my recent experience with Saltone's water-repellent spray was a letdown. I'd previously used Saltone's treatments and had no issues, but this time was different.
I applied the spray to my black suede boots, which are made from real suede. Suede is a type of soft leather with a velvety surface, made from animal hides through a special tanning process.
After applying the treatment, the color became more saturated and deep, but it wasn't exactly the 'wow' effect I was expecting. The moisture repelled well at first, but the top layer was still damp, and the inside of my foot was dry, while the part that came into contact with snow or ice was still wet.
I applied the spray correctly, following the instructions, but it didn't provide 100% protection. I had to reapply the protective layer every day, and it still didn't work as well as I'd hoped.
But that's not the worst part - the color of my boots changed after applying the treatment. The parts I treated turned out to be a lot darker, and the color difference is noticeable.
I applied the spray to the bottom part of the boots, which is the one that's always in contact with snow and ice. But the clear aerosol spray didn't leave any residue on the boots, or so the manufacturer claimed.
Are you kidding me?! The manufacturer's claim that this spray is colorless and leaves no residue is completely false. The color of my boots changed significantly after applying the treatment, and it's not just a minor variation in tone.
Let's take a look at the photos I took before and after applying the waterproofing spray. You can see the difference in color and the way the spray affected the suede material.
The left boot (I applied more waterproofing to it) and the right one (it got less) are completely different colors now. I have to say, the shoes looked pretty dull before I applied the waterproofing spray. The color might change slightly depending on the lighting, but you can see that there was no variation in tone to begin with!
The two bottom photos show the shoes before waterproofing, and the top one after. What's even more interesting is that the shoe I applied a bit of the spray to (the right one) is still soaking up water, and the shoe I drenched with the spray (the left one) is still getting water spots!
And that's not even considering the stains and discoloration! This was my first failed attempt at waterproofing, and it failed to deliver on all its promised functions.
It barely repels water, and there are much better and more effective products out there. It doesn't prevent water spots or discoloration. And to top it all off, it changes the color of colored shoes, despite the manufacturer claiming that this waterproofing spray is colorless and leaves no residue.
Yeah, it just changes the color of your shoes! Had they just warned not to use it on colored shoes, I wouldn't have had any complaints...
I'm seriously disappointed. I don't know what to do. I guess I could dye the second boot too and the color difference would be gone, but it'd be a whole different pair of boots from what I fell in love with - I wanted red boots with a warm golden tone, and now they'll be plain brown.
I'll pack them up and head to the cottage to buy new boots. What a shame. These boots were really growing on me. They were so warm, comfortable, soft, and had a great style...
And they were super affordable, so I'm not too bothered, I'm just really annoyed and disappointed.
If the dyeing process had ruined my boots for 15,000 rubles (luckily I didn't start with them), I'd be fuming, ripping them apart and tossing them...
