I've been introducing solid foods to my little one, and cauliflower puree is a must-try. I picked up a few different brands to compare, as they all had the same price point and single-ingredient composition. I've been really impressed with Saly Pridonnya's products, so I've stuck with them for most of my baby's food and drinks.
Saly Pridonnya Cauliflower Puree
DESCRIPTION
Cauliflower puree is a great first solid food option. It's packed with plant-based protein and essential microelements like calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium, which are crucial for a baby's health. Saly Pridonnya uses vegetables grown in their own gardens for their puree production.
Price: around 35 rublesPlace of purchase: Bolshoe YablokoWhere to buy: offline and online stores, children's stores, marketplacesVolume: 80 gramsShelf life: 24 months (1 day in open packaging)Manufacturer: Pridonnya GardensCountry: Russia
PACKAGING
The tiny glass jar, which holds 80 grams of puree, has the same design and color scheme as the rest of Saly Pridonnya's products. On the front, you'll see the brand name and the flavor 'bottle'. In this case, it's cauliflower puree.
On the back, there's all the information a consumer needs:
instructions on how to use and recommended feeding guidelines;full ingredient list;a note that the puree doesn't contain sugar or starch;nutritional and energy value of the product;
On one of the sides, there's also:
the manufacturer's full contact information (although it's in a different language);
the manufacturer's full contact information and how to get in touch with them;storage guidelines;the jar's volume;
The lid has a protective sticker, which I ripped before opening the jar. There was a satisfying 'pop' sound when opening the jar, so I'm confident that no one had opened it before me.
The expiration date is printed on the side of the lid. The product has a shelf life of 2 years, but only 1 day after opening. I've never come across a product with such short expiration dates, but I always try to buy the ones with the latest production date.
INGREDIENTS
The ingredients are completely natural, and besides the cauliflower puree, there's nothing else in the mix. No sugar, no starch, no salt, or flavor enhancers. This is noticeable in the taste, as the puree is completely neutral.
Cauliflower puree
STORAGE CONDITIONS
Store in a temperature range of 0°C to 25°C and relative humidity of 75% or less. After opening, store in the refrigerator for no more than 1 day at a temperature of 2°C to 6°C.
COLOR
The puree isn't very vibrant, it's more like overcooked cauliflower in color. There are no visible particles or other colors mixed in. I did notice some small white streaks, like the puree hadn't been mixed properly and the water had separated from the solids.
TASTE
The taste is neutral, cauliflower-like, and not to everyone's liking. It's similar to overcooked cauliflower, but homemade is always better. Even without salt or spices, it's a far cry from what I'd call delicious. The aftertaste has a slight bitterness that I'm not fond of.
SMELL
I wouldn't say it's a pleasant smell. I'm not a fan of cauliflower to begin with, so the aroma doesn't exactly win me over. It smells like cauliflower, nothing else.
CONSISTENCY
I'm not a fan of the consistency either. It's like a watery paste. When you scoop it with a spoon, it doesn't hold its shape. It's like a liquid that's just barely holding together. You have to be extremely careful when serving it, or it'll end up all over the place.
When serving, you have to be extremely careful not to spill it, as it'll just run right off the spoon. It's like trying to hold water in your hand.
When serving to kids, you have to be even more careful, as the liquid can spill and make a mess. The consistency is really strange, considering it's a pureed product. You'd expect it to be thicker, but it's not.
USAGE
I have to admit, the amount of puree we go through is quite impressive. When we started giving it to our little one as a regular part of their diet, one 80-gram jar would last us just one meal. We're not exactly speed eaters, and we like to take our time with it. To be honest, I'm not even sure how much we're supposed to give her at once - we just know it's 'enough.' We started with one teaspoon, then gradually increased it to two, and eventually moved on to half a jar at a time, which is half the recommended serving size. Given the low price point, I think the cost is quite reasonable. As you can see in the photo, this is the amount we give her when she's just starting out with the puree.
FINAL VERDICT
Recommended for children over 4 months old. Start with 0.5 teaspoons and gradually increase to 100 grams per day by 12 months.
I'm not going to sugarcoat it - my daughter wasn't exactly thrilled about this puree, and we had to coax her into eating it for a while. The flavor is quite strong, and she's definitely developed her taste buds already. The color from the Sady Pridonya brand wasn't exactly a hit with her, either.
While we didn't experience any adverse reactions to the puree, she did eat it with some reluctance and took a bit longer than usual to finish it. This was our second attempt at introducing a new veggie, after we'd already tried broccoli. We followed the pediatrician's advice and introduced it in small portions over three days, gradually increasing the amount if there were no negative reactions.
On the first day, we gave her about one teaspoon, then two or three, and eventually moved on to half a jar at a time. Thankfully, we didn't notice any changes in her stool or digestive system. Our daughter has been healthy since birth, and she's been having normal bowel movements one to two times a day without any issues. We didn't observe any skin reactions, either - no rashes or redness. The only thing that's got me a bit concerned is the consistency - it's a bit too watery, even though water isn't listed as an ingredient. That's why I'm deducting a point.
Breaking it down:
Low price point;Convenient jar design;Child-resistant lid;Neutral flavor;No added sugar, salt, or starch;Watery consistency;Neutral cauliflower smell;Our daughter didn't enjoy it;No digestive issues or problems with bowel movements;
I might consider buying it again in the future, but for now, we're on the lookout for other options. There are so many brands out there, each with its own price point and ingredient list. We'll keep trying different ones and comparing them to see which one we like best. That's why I'm giving it four points out of five - the watery consistency is a bit of a turn-off. Otherwise, it's left us with a positive impression, and I'd definitely recommend it to others.
