I'll be honest, Russian directors have a knack for creating amazing movies when they want to. This series had me hooked from the very first minute.
So, let's get to the good stuff.
The movie starts with Siberia. An old man is running across the snowy tundra, looking frantic. He's screaming: 'A witch is chasing me!'
Who is he? Turns out, he's Danila Gromov, a merchant. As he's dying, he tells his son that hell is waiting for him. He was a real nasty guy - a robber and a murderer who preyed on innocent people. But he stashed his loot in a secret spot, and now he's begging his son to buy him out of hell: 'Save me! Give these riches to the poor and to the church.'
His son, Petr Gromov, isn't even waiting for his father to die. He's already putting on his boots and heading out to dig up the treasure. I'm guessing he won't be giving any of it to charity...
He digs up the treasure, gets ready to grab it, but then a wolf shows up and starts snarling at him. Petr starts snarling back, and the wolf gets spooked and runs off. That's the answer: Petr Gromov will do whatever it takes for money.
So, the Gromov family gets rich and starts building a new, fancy house.
Petr's got a wife who's about his age, but she's got a pretty bad attitude towards him. And then there's his son, Prokhor, who's just a teenager and always chasing after girls.

Anfisa is played by Yuliya Peresild, and she's great in the role - a real firecracker, like Ludmila Gurchenko back in the day.
I have to admit, I was a bit surprised when I stumbled upon the new neighbors. Prokhor invited me over for a housewarming party, and I ended up going. That's when I caught the eye of his dad, Petr Gromov. He quickly figured out the situation and realized that his son was the main competition for my attention. His wife, on the other hand, was just a nuisance.
So, Petr thought it would be a great idea to send his son off to the taiga to search for gold and a new settlement. He gave him barely enough provisions to survive the harsh winter. It was a death sentence, but Prokhor had a loyal companion in Ibrahim. The guy was tough, resourceful, and dedicated - he'd give his life for his master. I'm curious to see what happens next.
When the show first came out, there was a huge stir. People were arguing left and right, and some even got into physical fights online. I was reading through all the comments, and it was crazy to see how passionate people were.
So, what caused all this drama? Well, it turned out that this show was a remake of another one from 1968, in black and white. Fans of the original and the new version clashed, especially the die-hard fans of the old show. They were going wild, shouting things like:
Anfisa isn't like that! Peresild doesn't fit the role!
Prokhor shouldn't be like that!
Sofya Zaika (K. Ernst's wife) got the role because of favors, not because she's good!
I was reading through all the comments, and I just couldn't believe how intense it all was. I was actually looking forward to watching the show and enjoying it. And you know what? I really liked Anfisa. Sofya Zaika was great too, she was so natural and convincing. And Prokhor... well, he's a pretty charming actor.
Anfisa, of course, is a real firecracker. She's got her son wrapped around her finger and her father-in-law eating out of the palm of her hand.
The film is stunning. The Siberian landscape is breathtakingly beautiful.I have to admit, there's something mystical and almost shamanic about this show. The finale is mind-blowing, and it tackles some heavy themes like love, loyalty, betrayal, and cruelty.
It raises some tough questions too: is there a boomerang effect? Does a son have to pay for his father's wrongdoings? And what about inherited traits - can someone with a history of bad blood in their family avoid following in their footsteps, or are they doomed to repeat the same mistakes?
This show is a wild ride, blending psychological drama with a healthy dose of mysticism. Hats off to the creators for leaving a lasting impression on me - it's definitely stuck with me long after I finished watching. If you're looking for a compelling series, I'd highly recommend checking it out.
After watching this show, I have to say that it's completely changed my perception of Julia Peresild - she's a talented actress who can really bring a character to life.
