Why I Won't Buy RIO Vitamin Granules for My Parrot Again - And What You Should Know

summarizeEditor's Summary

As a seasoned parrot parent, I've learned that not all pet supplements are created equal. I recently tried RIO vitamin granules, thinking they'd be a great addition to my feathered friend's diet. Unfortunately, my experience was a total letdown. After using them for a few weeks, I noticed some concerning side effects, including digestive issues like diarrhea and vomiting. My parrot didn't seem to like the strong, unpleasant odor, and I didn't notice any significant improvements in their health or behavior. In fact, I had to discontinue use due to the severity of the issues. In this review, I'll share my honest thoughts on these granules and what you should know before buying them.

I've been a huge fan of my lovable, gentle, and chatty parrot since the day I brought him home. In my enthusiasm, I ended up buying a ton of stuff that I thought was necessary and important - but boy, was I mistaken! I've already written about the mineral supplement for digestion, which you can find linked at the bottom of this review. Today, I want to share my thoughts on the vitamin granules.
Product Overview
The RIO vitamin-mineral granules contain a complex of essential vitamins, micro- and macroelements necessary for a well-balanced diet and optimal health in domestic birds. Daily use of functional feed eliminates the risk of adverse effects from unbalanced nutrition. It promotes immune system strengthening, improved vision, and skin and feather health.

Packaging and Design
The packaging is really nice - a neat plastic container with a bright lid. I love the way RIO's packaging looks, it's always so convenient. The only thing I don't like is the packaging of the food in bags.
There's a lot of information on the container, and it's all in different languages. The text is really small, so I had to read the description and gather info from other sources, as I ordered the granules on Sbermarket.
I was blown away by the rave reviews about these granules. I saw them and bought them without any hesitation. The packaging was spot on, with good delivery times and the can was wrapped in plastic. The lid is sturdy and doesn't leak.
Color, smell, and appearance
The granules themselves look pretty solid. They're different sizes, a light wheat color, and have a lovely aroma of grains with a hint of vanilla.
The granules are soft and can be crushed into a powder with your fingers. I think that's why they're different sizes - it's probably because there are a lot of small particles at the bottom of the can. Unfortunately, I won't get to see that for myself, as this product is going to the chickens in the backyard.
Dosage
Add 10% of the granules to your bird's regular seed mix daily.
My experience with using them
I guess the granules from RIO must be tasty, because my parrot loved them. I started by letting him try a few on my hand, as we always introduce new foods gradually. Then I just added them to his regular seed mix in the feeder.
Anyway, I started giving my bird these vitamins, and everything seemed fine until he got sick. But that's a whole different story. It was actually because of his illness that I stumbled upon a Facebook group for owners of pet parrots. And that's where I learned an incredible amount of reliable information about the nutrition, health, and care of birds.
I learned all about my own mistakes there.
Back to the granules. What's not to like?
Well, everything else is fine with them, except for the format. Parrots are very small and delicate birds. The amount of vitamins should be correct. Now let's look at dosing. You need to use 10% of the grain feed amount. But do you know how much your parrot will eat today?
Ornithologists say that an excess of vitamins is more dangerous for birds than a deficiency. If your parrot eats too much, the consequences will be sad. But you still need to give vitamins, especially to sick or weakened birds.
After this information, I was left speechless. I had no idea how much my bird eats in a day, so I had no idea how to figure out the 10% thing. You can't measure the feed, and my bird always has access to the grain mix because we leave for work and the bird is alone, pouring it out for the whole day. In the end, I immediately removed these granules from the diet.
Of course, you could weigh the feed, mix it with 10% granules, and pour it out. But the granules are of different sizes, so they'll unevenly fall into the feeder - today more, then less, or maybe not at all. And the bird might just pick out the granules, leaving the grain. In general, that's not a good option.
What vitamins can you give?
Giving birds liquid vitamins is better. They're added to the water in a specific proportion. The bird will drink the solution as needed, without overdosing or underdosing. Experts recommend Vinka vitamins or Mausertropfen from Beaphar. Yes, these vitamins are more expensive (from 1000 rubles), but the risk of harming your bird with proper use is almost zero.
Conclusion
I love the RIO manufacturer. Their grain feed is one of the best on our market. I also buy meadow grass seeds and Sengalese millet from RIO. But when it comes to vitamins and minerals for digestion - it's a failure. Specifically, I don't recommend them. One star is not for the quality or composition, but for the inability to properly dose the granules.
I'm glad I found out about the vitamin additive in the granules in time and avoided any consequences. I hope my review will be helpful and help keep your beloved pet healthy.
