This whodunit hooked me from the start, even though the killer's identity was pretty obvious from the beginning. I loved watching it from the bad guy's perspective – it was kind of fun.
The cast is solid, with some great performances throughout.
Poirot, the Belgian detective, is played by Constantin Raikin, and he's absolutely fantastic in the role. He brings this quirky character to life in a way that's both comedic and intelligent.
Sergey Makovetskiy is James Shppard, the doctor, narrator, and a guy with a serious case of wanderlust.
Lika Nifontova plays Carolina Shppard, James' sister, a gossip who's always sticking her nose in other people's business.
Svetlana Nemolyaeva is Cecil Eckroyd, the widow of Roger Eckroyd's younger brother, and the mother of Flora, a housekeeper.
Alexander Lazarev Jr. is Hector Blunt, a major, and a friend of Roger Eckroyd's who's hopelessly in love.
Tatiana Kuznetsova plays Mrs. Emma Cooper, the cook at Roger Eckroyd's house.
My thoughts on the movie:
I'm a huge Agatha Christie fan, so I loved the unique directorial choices. However, I think Svetlana Nemolyaeva overacted for my taste – those screams and gasps of hers made me think the husband was more likely to marry a city girl than a village eccentric.
I'd watch any movie with Makovetsky – I love how he acts, and this duet with Raykin is absolutely fantastic. I'm obsessed with every episode of these two.
Dr. Shepherd, played by Makovetsky, is an incredibly charming character. His longing for a rich, exciting life and travel is perfectly portrayed, even when he's not speaking – you can read everything off his face. What a talented actor.
Ray Kirin's performance in this role really stood out to me – the Poirot he created was exactly what I had in mind: comedic, intelligent, ruthless, perceptive, and absurd.

I have to say, Lazar's son is pretty underwhelming – either wooden or restrained, I'm not sure which, but I didn't pick up on any real emotions. In contrast, his mom is a total emotional rollercoaster.
Nifontova is, as usual, just going through the motions, playing a character that's completely unengaging. I'm baffled by the directors who cast their wives in these roles just for a pat on the back.
The film's actually shot pretty well, and I'm a fan of the voiceover that helps explain some of the plot points.
I have to say, the director's attention to detail in the book and the interior design of the time period really impressed me.
I also want to mention the music in the film – it's really grown on me, especially in the credits. The unique and enchanting soundtrack sets the tone perfectly and adds a lot of atmosphere to the movie.
I highly recommend this film for anyone who loves detectives and Agatha Christie. The music is top-notch, the atmosphere is spot-on, and the director's unconventional moves are super engaging – they help smooth out some of the rough edges. It's time to move on from the David Suchet image of Poirot and explore other options. I'm a bit bummed they didn't cast Raimi as Poirot for a few more sequels.
