A Big Disappointment: Not Worth Feeding Your Pet, But Okay for Outside Birds

summarizeEditor's Summary

I'm always on the lookout for honest reviews of products that didn't quite meet my expectations. After trying Perryco birdseed for my cockatiel, I was pretty underwhelmed. The seed is just a standard cardboard box with a thin layer of food inside, which doesn't provide great value for money. However, I did notice that it's a decent option for feeding birds outside, as it's cheap and attracts a variety of species. If you're looking for a budget-friendly birdseed for your local park, Perryco might be worth considering. But for your own feathered friends, I'd recommend exploring other options. I used it for a week and the seed quality was inconsistent, with some batches being better than others. The lack of variety in the seed mix can get boring for birds, and the cardboard packaging is flimsy and not very durable. If you're feeding a large number of birds, Perryco birdseed can be a good value for money, but for individual birds or those with specific dietary needs, it might not be the best option.

Hello everyone!
I'm writing this review because I'm always on the lookout for honest feedback on products that didn't quite live up to my expectations. I know it's helpful to read reviews before making a purchase, but sometimes those purchases are spontaneous, and I just don't have the time to research beforehand.
So, after trying Perryco birdseed for cockatiels and being pretty unimpressed, I decided to put it in the search bar and stumbled upon a 5-star review! I was surprised (at first, I thought it must have been a bad batch), but the girl in the review had bought this food (apparently, 5 packets of it, since it's pretty cheap) to feed the birds in the park, and she'd never even had a cockatiel. I think it's not entirely fair to rave about a product in that case, since people are more interested in hearing about its quality for their own bird, not for feeding the local wildlife.
Back to the point: I'd never come across this brand before. My mom's workmate offered her this affordable birdseed (around 40-50 rubles for 500g) and since everyone at work was raving about it, she decided to give it a try.
It's just a standard cardboard box, but it looks nice, with the main info on the side panel. The ingredients are pretty standard for a basic birdseed mix: Red and yellow millet, canary seed, oats, sunflower seeds.
I was expecting a mix specifically tailored for cockatiels, but this is clearly a seed-based food for larger birds. And let me tell you, there are a ton of seeds and oats in here. I'm not sure about you, but our bird doesn't even bother to crack open the seeds, and the oats are just not an issue.
After removing the seeds and a bit of oats, there's still half the box left. If you take out the oats, you'll be left with almost nothing from the original 500g. By the way, there's no extra packaging inside the cardboard box, so it may get damaged from moisture while on store shelves (just a theoretical concern).
It's not immediately apparent from the photo, but when you pour the food into your hand, you can feel the dustiness. And when I dug through the food and re-poured it back into the box, I found a weird sand-like substance at the bottom (unfortunately, I didn't manage to capture it on camera – but trust me, I'm not making it up).
You can also find random weeds and the like (not everything, just a few examples). I get that you can't expect too much from a cheap bird food, and I would have let the seeds slide, but the sand is a major issue.
The Bottom Line
Way too many large elements (more than half the box is oats and seeds), which our cockatiel won't even touch.Random debris (weeds, leaves).Dusty grains.A ton of small, weird sand.I wouldn't recommend this one - I'd rather stick with something tried and true like Prestige or RIO.
