Mixed Bag of Good and Bad at Perekrestok

summarizeEditor's Summary

I've been shopping at Perekrestok for a while now, and while it's one of my go-to grocery stores, I've encountered some mixed results. The cleanliness and product selection are consistently great, but there are some variations depending on the location. I love the charm of Perekrestok, but it's not without its flaws. For example, the store near my home has a fantastic produce section with unique fruits like tangerines and red bananas. However, the store's customer support has been a letdown a few times. I've had to deal with unhelpful staff members and long wait times, which can be frustrating. Despite these issues, I still shop at Perekrestok regularly because the prices are competitive, and the quality of products is generally good. But if you're new to the store, be prepared for some trial and error to figure out which locations are the best and how to navigate their return policy.

I've been shopping at Perekrestok for a while now, and it's one of my go-to grocery stores. I usually end up here or at Lenta, but Perekrestok has a certain charm to it. The cleanliness and product selection are consistently good, whether it's a big supermarket or a smaller one near my home. Of course, there are some variations, but it's a reliable choice.
The product selection is pretty great, but I didn't feel the need to rush around taking pictures of everything, so I'll just go through it in order.
The produce section is pretty big. I've found some really unique fruits at Perekrestok, like tangerines and red bananas. As you can see, they're one of the few stores that still sell watermelons and cantaloupes out of season - this photo was taken in early April. They also have a variety of apples, oranges, and bananas, as well as some really exotic options. I usually buy my veggies closer to home, but I've picked up some tasty treats at Perekrestok, like sweet mandarins and all sorts of berries. Sadly, the greens section is a bit of a letdown - they have a huge selection of leafy greens, but yesterday, out of about 15 containers, only 2 or 3 had anything remotely fresh. And the 'fresh mint' was all wilted.
I've walked past the section with houseplants and seasonal goods, and they've got a spring-gardening theme going on right now. The live flowers in the crossroads, like you'd find in any supermarket or hypermarket, aren't exactly the best quality, and the prices are pretty steep. I picked up some gorgeous hyacinths and daffodils in a pot recently, but I've also had a bad experience with the oak-leaved geranium I bought in Peresek. It died off pretty quickly. I've had my fair share of dealing with pests, and I'm not about to spend my money on plants that are already infested.
The Peresek has its own product lines, like "Green Line", which is their eco-friendly range. You'll usually find these stalls scattered throughout the store, but I've got some issues with the quality. For starters, the prices are often way too high, and then there's the ingredients. I mean, who puts salad dressing with gelatin in it? It's probably just some sort of fatty mass that's been gelatinized and cut into slices. Needless to say, it's got nothing to do with actual salad. I mostly buy nuts and seeds from the Green Line.
Alcohol. The booze section in this store is massive. I've cut back on drinking lately, but I do pop in sometimes to grab some craft beer or mead. Prices are standard, and the selection is a bit bigger than what I've seen elsewhere.
Household essentials. I've picked up some household stuff here, like cleaning supplies and a few random things for the house. They've got a big selection of WonderLab, Synergetic, and Grass products.
Skincare. The skincare selection here is pretty big, and it's been getting more and more Korean-focused over the years. I've seen some Letualia products, like Dolce Milk. Shampoos and body washes are a bit pricey, but you can find some good deals on things like face masks and toothbrushes.
Meat and seafood. They've got a huge selection of cold cuts, cheeses, and seafood. I've picked up some good-quality salmon, but the prices on red fish are way too high. I don't usually buy sausages here, but they've got some interesting cheese options, like Tet de Muana and some harder-to-find types of cheese.
Meat/Fish. I've bought fresh meat from the Crossroads a couple of times, and I wasn't impressed with the quality. The fish selection is interesting, but I HATE that fresh fish is displayed on ice in open 'aisles', including steaks. It's super unhygienic, and I've seen people touching the steaks a few times...
I haven't bought live fish from this store, but the local carp and sturgeon always look pretty miserable.
Dairy products are represented in roughly the same assortment (by brands) as in Diksi. However, the taste of the same yogurts is always better in Crossroads.
Bakery products are represented both in packaging and as freshly baked goods. The products are the same as in Pyaterochka.
Cooking in the store has a lot of ready-to-eat dishes. Not all of them are tasty, though. I've bought the pickled herring under a fur coat a few times - it's delicious, but sometimes it's too fatty and salty. I try not to buy pre-made salads, 50/50 chance, but when I do, it's often something heavy and mayonnaise-based. A while back, I bought the liver patties, and they didn't impress me. I used to buy the local baked rolls, but then they became mayonnaise-based and tasteless. My husband occasionally buys the grilled chicken, and I've tried it - it's okay, but I'm not a fan of that kind of thing... By the way, I've never gotten food poisoning from the local cooking, and that's a plus.
Dairy products are presented in a huge assortment of both branded and product-specific items. The crossroads have a ton of tea, coffee, sweets, spices, and so on.Freezing. In the big crossroads, there are 4 long rows of frozen products. There's almost nothing on the shelves (except for shrimp and mussels) anymore, but there are plenty of vegetables, seafood, and pre-cooked meals like pizza and 4-season products, and so on.
My latest purchasesAs it turns out, I originally went to the crossroads to buy these fruit baskets. They turned out to be too big for grocery shopping, but I adapted them for sorting yarn, storing synthetic insulation, and holofiber, and other crafting supplies.
This is a local brand from the crossroads. The price of this mesh bag (30*40) was very reasonable - 59 rubles per unit. So, I went to the big crossroads to buy another 5 units, but they were out of stock. In the end, I ended up buying the following:
Nori Sen SoyRice Paper Sen SoyEggs 10 piecesWafer CrackersHandheld Grater)Candy Sprinkles * 2 piecesLemonApple (1 piece)Caramel Cubes Children's Juice * 4 piecesCottage Cheese * 2 piecesSpices: Fried Onion, Smoked Paprika
Sauces: 3 Salad Sauces from Sen Soy, Yakitori Sen Soy, Soy Sauce in Portions - 3 pieces, Local - Cheese and Barbecue - 6 pieces eachTeaSalad in a BowlBaconCrackersInstant CoffeePtitimShrimp LemonadeSmoked Chicken BreastCucumberCrab MeatBowlTreats for Pets
I've got to say, this little bowl is really nice. And at a pleasant price of 199 rubles. I guess it's because it's a winter collection.
I've gotta say, the final cost of the purchase was 3737 rubles, taking into account discounts and bonus points. The original price was 4986 rubles.
Peresekrestok's got some major flawsIt's a real pain when you're not sure what you're going to pay at the checkout. I've lost count of all the times I've been surprised by the price. There was this one time when I picked up four different types of frozen shrimp, all lined up neatly in the freezer. I grabbed the ones that were on sale for some crazy discount - 500 rubles instead of 899. But when I got to the checkout, the price tag was different by just one letter. The ones that were on sale were nowhere to be found, and the ones that were on display didn't have a price tag.
I had a similar experience when I bought cellulose sponges at a huge discount - 60 rubles per pack. I grabbed a few, but when I got to the checkout, the price was 300 rubles. The cashier claimed that the price on the tag wasn't the main information, but luckily, the manager was more cooperative. And that's not the only story like this.
The store's got some weird policies too. Like, during the day, they'll close off several sections for inventory. You'll have to search the whole store for a staff member to get the item, but as it turns out, they just hand it over without any record. So, I'm still trying to figure out why they'd close off sections during peak hours for inventory.
That's my two cents
Despite the pros on the product range, there are some downsides - the staff isn't the friendliest (I've had some rudeness, but it's rare), the veggie section is always looking a bit wilted and brown, and the price discrepancies make it hard for me to give the store a full 5 stars.
That's all from me, thanks for reading!
