A Bumpy Ride with Optic City: Glasses Made, but Not Without Headaches

summarizeEditor's Summary

I recently had a mixed bag of experiences with Optic City, where I got my glasses made at one of their branches. While the staff was friendly and the atmosphere was nice, the quality of the glasses left much to be desired. The frames I chose didn't quite fit right, and the lenses were prone to dirt and stubborn stains. I had to spend extra money on special cleaning sprays, which wasn't what I wanted. The weird marks on my lenses near the frame that wouldn't come off were a major letdown. Despite the initial promise of a modern equipment and individual approach, my experience with Optic City was a total letdown. I'm still trying to figure out if it was worth the hassle and money. I used the glasses for a week and the build quality surprised me - the buttons feel solid and the battery lasts longer than I expected, but in this case, it was the opposite. I'm not sure if I'd recommend Optic City to others based on my experience. While the staff was friendly and the atmosphere was nice, the quality of the glasses left much to be desired.

A Bumpy Ride with Optic City: Glasses Made, but Not Without Headaches
I recently had the misfortune of getting my glasses made at one of the Optic City branches, and let me tell you, it was a wild ride.
Last time I got my glasses at the Aiykraft store, I was generally satisfied, but after a while, I noticed my lenses were getting really dirty and were hard to clean. I had to spend extra money on special cleaning sprays, which wasn't exactly what I wanted. Plus, all my previous glasses from school could be cleaned with just water from the tap. A few months later, I noticed weird marks on my lenses near the frame that wouldn't come off and looked more like worn-out coating.
I decided it was time for new glasses, and this time I went to a different optician. Let me tell you, I was in for a surprise.
I walked into the nearest Optic City branch, which was close to my home. The place was empty, but the staff was super friendly, and the atmosphere was nice.
The prices weren't the lowest, but they were reasonable and more budget-friendly than other opticians I'd been to.
They helped me choose a frame, and everything seemed fine. Then, when it came to ordering, they started pushing me to get my eyes checked again. Apparently, I needed a prescription for my glasses, and that required an eye exam. I thought, why not? It had been two years since my last eye exam, and something might have changed. Plus, I had a small issue I wanted to discuss.
The eye exam.
I booked an appointment on the day the doctor was available at this branch, and I went through a separate room for the checkup. Unlike at Icrafte, they apparently checked everything possible. They even detected the leading eye. On the other hand, I had another question about my vision that wasn't directly related to glasses, but they sent me to an ophthalmologist at the clinic instead. Oh well, an optician isn't expected to know everything, let alone offer advice.
So, it turned out I have astigmatism. When I said I've been wearing non-corrected astigmatism glasses since school and nobody ever told me I needed to correct it, they strictly told me it's a must and explained the science behind it. How light passes through the eye, where it converges, what needs to be done to see better, and so on. They made a pretty solid case.
So, I got told I absolutely have to correct my astigmatism and all my previous objections that I just needed glasses that were more comfortable were dismissed.
Naturally, I'm not an ophthalmologist, so they know better.
They fitted me with special glasses that have interchangeable lenses, which I last saw in school, and started trying out different options. They found a good match. I went out into the corridor to try them out, and they worked amazingly well. I could see a lot clearer and farther than before. It was like a whole new world.
So, I agreed to everything, chose the most comfortable lens option, finalized the order, and waited for my glasses.
The glasses.
The glasses were made pretty quickly – within a week. When it was time to pick them up, I got a text message.
Notification that my order was ready Everything was great, apart from one thing.
I headed to the optometrist's office at the polyclinic while waiting for my order to be processed, but it was for a completely unrelated issue. They checked my vision from top to bottom, apparently to tick off some kind of 'dispenzerization' box. They tested my vision using the old glasses, and the verdict was: '100% correction.' They even found what they called astigmatism, but when I asked about it, they just brushed it off like it was nothing. That made me a bit anxious.
I took the glasses and put them on right there in the clinic. The frame fit perfectly – it still looked great, even better than before.
But problems started when I got home and tried to use my computer in the evening. There was this weird feeling like everything was very sharp. I tried moving further away from the screen and adjusting the font size, but my eyes felt like they were being stretched somehow. I felt like my right eye's eye muscle was being pulled and twitching, but I'm no expert, so I'm not sure if that's what was happening. They told me to get used to it, and that I'd get used to it eventually. So, I tried to get used to it.
But when I tried switching back to my old glasses while working, I couldn't see anything at all – it was really unsettling. I realized that maybe my eye muscle wasn't adjusting fast enough. But it still felt uncomfortable.
What's weird is that the discomfort was worse when I tried to focus my gaze, like when reading text (regardless of the font size). It would ease up when I watched videos, though. And strangely, I didn't have any issues when I was outside. In fact, I could see things much farther and clearer than before. But the ability to read signs on store doors with tiny text was kind of a letdown, because the computer problems persisted and got worse. Plus, I started having trouble focusing – it was harder to concentrate on the text on the screen and even understand what it was saying.
I ended up going to a private optician about a week later, just to be sure, and scheduled an appointment with a professor. They ran the whole gamut of tests again, and when I asked about my astigmatism, they told me it was there, but small and easily compensable.
I brought my old glasses and the new ones with me, and the optician's staff compared them on their equipment. The verdict was that I needed to get to an optician ASAP and have my lenses redone, because not only did I not need the cylinders at all, but they'd made them way too strong.
(Sorry in advance for the technical inaccuracies – I'm completely clueless when it comes to optometry, and 'cylinders' was the first time I'd even heard of the term in this context, so I'm just repeating what I was told.)
And yeah, they confirmed that I need glasses that are comfortable to wear, not just ones that 'should' work.
On the redone glasses.
Honestly, I was ready to give them a piece of my mind if necessary, but the optician was surprisingly understanding. The receptionist just asked me to come back the next day and fill out a return form when the person who'd originally taken my order was available.
Okay, so I came back the next day, filled out the form, and the specialists took my old glasses' measurements and took the new ones back for free. I got the redone glasses back a week later and breathed a sigh of relief – everything was great, everything was visible just as much as I needed it to be, and my eyes felt fine. Although for about a month and a half after that, I'd get these weird effects where my vision would just start wobbling and doubling, but eventually it would settle back down. I guess my eyes just needed to readjust. Over time, these episodes became less frequent, and now, about three months later, everything's back to normal.
So, the incident was wrapped up, and I've got no complaints about the optician.
I have to admit, after the adjustment, I noticed another issue. The frame became uncomfortable. It felt like it was sitting way off, and the worst part was, it was pressing against my forehead and nose. I'm not ruling out the fact that it might have just been in my head, considering my eye problems were affecting my cognitive abilities. Maybe it was just my own bias. Unfortunately, I didn't take any photos before, so I didn't have anything to compare it to.
It's possible that the frame might have warped during the lens replacement, which I've read about before, but I've never experienced myself, so I couldn't say for sure.
Over time, I noticed that the temples were digging so deeply into my skin that they even left marks.
The mark left by the temples (something I'd never seen before). I managed to partially fix the issue on my own by gradually stretching the temples to a more comfortable position, so that's okay.
In the end, everything worked out well.
I'm adding one extra star only because the opticians were super helpful and replaced everything for free right away. Honestly, that's why I'm giving 3 stars instead of 2.
Result:
I'm now wearing the adjusted glasses comfortably and feel relatively okay in them, so I've got no complaints against the clinic anymore. However, I'm unlikely to go back there again. In the future, I'll be opting out of eye checks and insisting on new glasses being made to match my old ones. If I start feeling like something's changed, I'll probably go back to the private clinic where they helped me figure out the solution.
After all, health and comfort are more important than money.
