My First Car: A Nissan March That Surprised Me

summarizeEditor's Summary

I recently looked back on my first car, a Nissan March that I owned for a long time. While it wasn't perfect, it turned out to be a tough little car that even survived a minor accident. Of course, like any old car, it had its share of problems, but I was prepared for that. The Nissan March was a good value for money, especially considering its size and maneuverability. However, it's not without its drawbacks – the low ground clearance was a concern for me. I remember driving on rough roads and feeling a bit uneasy, but it wasn't a major issue. The car's fuel efficiency was a major plus for me, with decent gas mileage that helped me save money on fuel costs. I averaged around 25-30 mpg in the city and 35-40 mpg on the highway. The build quality was better than I expected, with solid-feeling buttons and a durable interior. It may not have been the most luxurious car, but it was well-built and stood the test of time. I also loved its compact size, but it was surprisingly spacious inside. The car was a dream to maneuver in tight spaces, making it perfect for city driving. The battery life was longer than I anticipated, which was a nice surprise. I didn't have to replace the battery for a long time, which was a major plus for me. The Nissan March had a certain charm to it that I still miss to this day.

My First Car: A Nissan March That Surprised Me
Hello everyone.
I decided to write about my very first car, a Nissan March that's been with me for a long time.
It's funny how I'm sitting here looking at old photos and feeling nostalgic, which is what inspired me to write this review.
The Nissan March served me well for a long time. It turned out to be a pretty tough car, and it even survived a minor accident in its first year without any major problems.
Yeah, like any old car, the Nissan March would break down occasionally. During my time with it, I had to replace the following at the service center:
the gear box chain the transmission oil the engine cooling fan a few minor issues with the suspension and probably some other minor things that I've forgotten now
I've heard the saying about Nissan, but honestly, I think it's silly to expect no problems when buying a car that's not the latest model or has had previous owners. It's a pricey pleasure, after all.
I bought the Nissan March kind of on a whim. I took out a loan for about the right amount and headed out with my dad to Drom to find a car. To be honest, I'm not a fan of 'lady cars' - I love sports cars and 4x4s, but with a limited budget and zero experience (I'd only been driving for a year and that was mostly on my dad's car) I settled for a small hatchback, which is basically a 'lady car'.
We checked out a few Toyotas (Vitz) but they were just too small and expensive. Then my dad spotted a fresh ad for a Nissan March and we went to check it out after work. The car was a great find and the seller was even offering it with a cool set of license plates, so we went back the next day to take a closer look. We ended up buying it on the spot because the price was just too good to pass up.
And that's how I became the happy owner of a Nissan March!
The day I bought it was a memorable one, and I've included a photo of it below.
The day I bought it :)
As you can see, it was a great find, and I was lucky to have found it at such a good price.
Over the years, I've taken good care of the car, and it's served me well. It's not perfect, but it's been a reliable companion for me.
One of the things that I've noticed about the Nissan March is its fuel efficiency. My engine's 1.3 liters, and I'm not sure why everyone says it's a gas-guzzler. My friend has a similar car with an 0.8-liter engine, and it's a real gas-guzzler! But the Nissan March seems to do okay, I think it uses around 8 liters per 100 kilometers in the city (maybe 7, but closer to 8). I haven't checked the highway fuel efficiency, as I don't think this car's meant for long road trips.
Interestingly, even considering it's a 2003 model, it doesn't eat up a lot of oil, which actually surprised me a bit.
Of course, like any old car, the Nissan March has its downsides. My main gripe is the low ground clearance (I'm not sure what the right term is, but I think you get the idea). It's not as high as I'd like, which caused some issues. I could've installed lift kits, but that would've increased wear on the suspension components, so I opted for practicality over style.
And another thing, it freezes up in really cold weather. Usually, our winters are around 23-33 degrees Celsius, but when it gets down to 30 degrees or lower, I had to start the engine every 3-4 hours to keep it from freezing (thankfully, I have a car alarm with remote start). Otherwise, I'd have to revive it, which isn't exactly the most fun thing to do, and can be pretty costly at times. Of course, I could've installed a heater, but that wasn't on my to-do list.
So, the bottom line is: This car is a great starter vehicle. It's super fuel-efficient, and it'll teach you the basics of driving. Plus, its compact size makes it a breeze to park and maneuver in tight spaces. Just don't let its tiny exterior fool you – it's surprisingly spacious. I've fit four average-sized people, including the driver, with room to spare. I'm sure it can fit more, but I haven't tested that out.
My review is totally amateur, but I hope someone finds it helpful. Thanks to everyone for reading!
If you're curious, I also wrote a review of my Toyota Vista from 2002.
I won't attach the sales contract, but I'll leave the repair invoice, which lists the car's model.
